Windows 8.1 File Explorer Crashing

    Question

  • Hello I have recently gone to the Preview of Windows 8.1 and i noticed that every time i click on file explorer, right click on a file folder, and try to access skydrive explorer just crashes and then restarts. There is one loophole i found and that is if i click on control panel and then i change that to explorer it works until I right click  or I try to change file location then it crashes. This is a temporary solution that I am having to deal with but I would really like to get it fixed before I start school this fall. So any help would be great

  • Do you have any error code. Does any text appears. Did you mean that when you open the Skydrive folder explorer crashes and restarts !

    Hello

  • I think that it may be a driver problem or Bad Memory ! If you can't solve the problem, back up your data & try to refresh your PC !

    Thanks !

  • Disable the DLNA Shell Extension :

    Windows 8.1 Preview Explorer.exe crashes

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/home_is_where_i_lay_my_head/archive/2013/06/30/windows-8-1-preview-explorer-exe-crashes.aspx

copy this into a .reg file and import the .reg:

        Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
        "{289AF617-1CC3-42A6-926C-E6A863F0E3BA}"=""

    Hello

    Friday, July 05, 2013 3:31 PM
  • please download this reg file from my SkyDrive:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer_full.reg

and make a double click on the file to import it. If you can't do this, run regedit.exe and import the registry file there!

When the Windows Explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service [1] creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the dump file (compressed 7z or RAR to reduce the size) to your public Skydrive [2] folder and post the link here. I take a look at the dump with the Debugger, maybe I can see which Shell extension is the cause.

After you generated the dumps, download and import this regfile:

    http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer_full_uninstall.reg

    to stop the dump creation.

  • Ok here is the dump file

Thanks for everyone trying to help. This issue has been driving me insane and it would be nice to get this fixed.

MediaIconsOverlays.dll causes it. From what I see this belongs to SkyDrive.

  • Hi!

Thank you very much! I already suspected Classic Shell, but since the updater told me I was using the most recent version, I never thought that there might be a release candidate available which fixes this.

Oh and btw: I only use Classic Shell to hide the Start button, since I agree with the former position of MS that it is just a waste of space in the task bar (especially on touch devices or an HTPC, which this one is). I don't understand why there is no option to disable it in the taskbar settings dialog.

    Well: Thanks again!

    Regards,
    René Slowenski

  • you can use this smaller tool to hide the Start Button:

  • Hi again!

Yes, I already know - the developer of Classic Shell mentioned it in the forum as well. When I first searched for a tool like this, I didn't find anything and thought this might not be a popular demand (after all that "Give us back the Start button!" whining).

    Thank you!

  • The thing is that explorer won't map network share. Share can be created only via CMD and net use. After that everything is working. But after sign out and sign in and press on disconnected map in explorer, explorer crush.

Ok, this share is working on win7, so it's not a problem with them. If I'd like to connect it to a share, it popup that is not accessible.  Its a strange thing :/

Oh, and there is no prompt, just crush. But on win 7 is prompt in the same situation.

  • ok, I asked MS and the crash is caused when Credential Providers are called multiple times. It is on their radar for Updates after Win8.1 has been released. So others have run into this, too.
