Cannot start Windows Server installation

    Question

  • Hi,

I want to upgrade my Server 2008 R2 to Server 2012 R2. But everytime I start the setup in Windows for an in-place upgrade,  an error message pops-up saying "Windows Setup experienced an unexpected error. To install Windows, restart the installation.", right after the "Setup is starting..." stage.

This doesn't have to do with the media or drive. I tried with a virtual drive, and still the same. It doesn't have to do with the image as well, the same error appears if I try to start a Server 2008 R2 installation or any other Windows installation.

The OS hard disk is a dynamic hard disk.

Here is the log from Setup.act:

    Any thoughts about this issue?

  • Okay I have finally given up on the issue and booted directly from the installation disc to make a clean install. The setup started just fine and 2012 R2 is running just fine on the server. So this is not a motherboard, BIOS or hardware issue. There is something the Windows setup didn't like about the current Windows software configuration and it could not describe it properly.

  • Thanks for your reply. However I checked and I have the latest BIOS from the board manufacturer...

  • Might also check the roll back log.

  • There is no roll back log, as the installation isn't even able to start, it hasn't reach the point where it can roll back something.

  • Is the system volume mirrored by chance?

  • No, there is no software mirrorring on any of the disks... The OS partition is BitLocker encrypted though, but protection is suspended.

    assigning temporary drive letter...

I think the HDD has only 1 partition and Windows could not extract into another partition so, it hasn't reach the point where it can roll back

  • I wasn't able to find anything definitive but it may be a disk space problem. You may need a minimum of 32 gB free space. Possibly more depending on roles selected and or RAM installed.

  • The partioning of the hard disk is the standard partitioning created by the Windows installation (200 MB system partition containing the BCD data, and the second partition contains the OS and filling the remaining space). The partition has more than 300 GB of free space, and the server has 6.5 GB free of RAM out of 8 GB. Definitely not a resource problem.

I think the problem lies in the fact that it is a dynamic partition, but I can't change it back to basic to test it. If only the Windows setup error log was complete and helpful.

  • Might be. The article mention mirrored AND dynamic but maybe meant OR.

  • I will give a shot at software that can convert partitions back to basic without loss of data (as I've heard they exist), and try the setup again.

  • Having the latest BIOS does not guarantee that the board will support 2012.  You can check www.windowsservercatalog.com to see if your board does support 2012 or 2012 R2.  If it is not there, you will need to check with the board's manufacturer to see if they actually do support but have not yet qualified (although for Microsoft to support, the vendor has to submit its qualification to be published on above web site).
