SQL Server 2012 Standalone Setup

    Question

  • Hi,

I'm setting up two new SQL 2012 SP1 Standart Edition on two brand new VM's.

Setup goes smoothly until I select all the components and then I press Next.  The setup seems freezes showing "Please Wait":

Looking at the setup log I'm finding a error that never seen before and that I'm not able to find any valid references on the internet:

  • Hi Eduardo,

Before you prepare to install SQL Server 2012 SP1 on the VM, I recommend you run the System Configuration Checker. This tool will check if you have every requirements to install SQL Server. In addition, when you install SQL Server on a virtual machine under Hyper-V, this requires the “host” to be Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2. I recommend you can choose the standard features to install and check if it is still wait more minutes.

  • Hi,

Just in case this helps anyone with the same problem seems that the issue was related that the computer name had more then 15 characters and when looking on the summary.txt we can confirm that the name didn't match the name on of the machine.

In my case a installation was made without any network connection and worked just fine since was not possible to rename the machine name to under 15 characters.

MSFT support team worked with us on this incident we have open to help us achieve this conclusion.

  • How long have you been waiting? It should not take more than minute or two.

  • Hi,

I can wait forever since it nevers exits from that state, and the timestamp is a perfect match with the exception:

    (05) 2013-11-19 03:42:03 Slp: Error: Action "Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.SetupExtension.SetMultiInstanceTransformAction" threw an exception during execution.

    (05) 2013-11-19 03:42:03 Slp: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionExecutionException: Value cannot be null.

    (05) 2013-11-19 03:42:03 Slp: Parameter name: Cannot find SqlDiscoveryData in Datastore ---> System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.

But I'm not able to find more details on the "Cannot find SqlDiscoveryData in Datastore " exception anywhere...

    Thanks
