Security Update (KB2917500) fails to update on SCCM client

    Question

  • In this latest batch of December updates, I've run across about 4 updates that stubbornly refuse to update from the Software Center. They all return an error 0x87D00705 which in a CMTrace lookup says the error is "Pause State Required". The actual message in Software Center reads

The software change returned error code 0x87D00705(-2016409851).

The UpdatesDeployment.log shows the same error code. When I Retry the update, it logs this

Has anyone run into this error before?

  • I found that a restart of the Windows Update service, on my machine, sorted things out. Seems that some of the updates didn't want to play well with others. I'm good now.

  • it's been seen here:

at a guess, that message is trying to say "I've been told to pause, by something else".
what else is happening on the client machine at this time (merge your client logs via CMTrace to see a broader picture), maybe another CCM agent module is running? (e.g. SWD or something)

also, check the windowsupdate.log, in case there is further info in there.

the other thought which occurs to me, is that there might be a pending primitive action (hard restart), so also take a look in the system and application event logs on the client.
the UD log you show, suggests that the update hasn't even downloaded to the client yet, so it could also be something related to BITS queue on the client machine? (BITS is unavailable/broken/busy?)

edit: another thought; is this update "special" in some way, i.e. does it require "exclusive" mode? (what is the update in question, does it have the exclusive bit set if you check it in the MU catalog website)

without diving into all the other logs to see what's happening in the time-frame, it looks like the "normal" sequence of detect->download->install->confirm, isn't getting traction.

  • One final observation on this. We've seen this only on our Win 8 machines. It seems that the initial update pass installs about 90% of the updates and the others Fail. After subsequent reboots, some of the machines successfully reinstall the remaining updates; the other machines require a manual restart of the Windows Update service to install the remaining updates.
