Dell server boot loop after capture attempt - MDT 2012u1

    Question

  • I've spent a few days configuring a Dell T320 server as a reference image for 8 other servers I have to install.  I did this on hardware, as the systems are identical and this is a one time build... the image won't be used again, so I didn't need to generalize it using a VM.  All worked swimmingly until the capture.

I connected to the deployment share, ran lite-touch.vbs, got the menu of options, selected capture, gave it an admin password, plus the account/domain/pw to connect to the deployment share.

It ran it's sysprep, rebooted and now it keeps rebooting.  It gets to the "Windows is loading files..." with the progress bar at the bottom.  That fills twice, then a hard reboot occurs.  I have monitoring enabled on the MDT server and it lists the status as "Execute Sysprep", step 16 of 23.

Can I recover this or am I rebuilding it again?  TIA!

ps. Neglected to mention that this is Server 2008 R2, all patched up to current security releases.

  • Hi there,

What you need to do is generate a boot image, and boot the server from USB stick or something like that. Then when the boot image is finished loading, press "F8" for command prompt. (Ignore whatever wizard pane prompts up) Then start notepad by typing "notepad" in the command prompt.

Browse with notepad to your C:\ drive, or at least the volume which looks like your C:\ drive (in WinPE drive letters may be changed/twisted) en look for a X:\MININT folder, if possible delete this folder and reboot your server.

If you can't find your C:\ drive, then there's your problem. You need to add additional storage and network drivers into your boot image. Because what happens when you try to sysprep and capture a server or workstation? This cannot be done within the current running operating system. So it needs to be ran outside your current operating system >>> WinPE, however, how can WinPE capture your OS if it cannot access your disk because of missing storage and network drivers?

If this post is helpful please click "Mark for answer", thanks! Kind regards

  • Thanks, but I'm pretty sure it isn't an issue with a driver missing.  It might have been a driver conflict, but I'm able to boot the server off the LiteTouch PE ISO or a disk.

From what I could tell, it did the sysprep from the litetouch.vbs, then got stuck on the reboot.  I slapped in a USB stick with the same LiteTouch image on it and it booted up fine, then finished the capture and the mini-install.  Not sure why, but it worked.

I'm currently rebuilding my deployment share with the capture so I can see if the captured image has the same problem or if it'll deploy correctly.

  • Looked like the install went well, except that I may have accidentally included another system's drivers in the injection process.  I got the standard error...
