    Question

  • Hi,

We are testing our first/new Windows 8.1 machine in our office.  I am trying to test all the applications we use currently on XP to work on 8.1.  The first issue I experienced so far is with printing PDF.  In XP we use third party PDF printer "PDF Image Printer 7.0".  When installing on Win 8.1 is displaying the message for successful installation.  But when I try to print to PDF Word document by File->Print, I can not find Pdf printer in the list of printers.  And it's not in printer devices either.

Is this the versioning issue, perhaps I need to contact the manufacturer for up to date version which would work for Win 8.1 64bit?

I also found that I can publish a Word document to PDF, which does almost the same.  I don't understand what is the difference between publishing to PDF using Win 8.1 utility and Printing to PDF using third party application.  And do I need third party PDf printer if Windows 8.1 offers PDF publishing functionality?

    Apologies for the lengthily message.

  • You can check with the Application vendor on Windows 8.1 compatibility .

  • Thanks for the reply.  Can you also clarify if Windows 81 has got built-in functionality of converting Word or other documents into PDF (publishing to PDF), which is free, why would one need third party PDF printer to do the same thing?  Or is there some fundamental differences that I am not aware of.

    Thanks again

  • I don't think Windows have this feature by default. You can still check with the software vendor on compatibility.

  • Well, I am using Windows 8.1 Pro.  I uninstalled our third party vendor PDF Image printer.  I opened Word document and instead of choosing Print I click Export, in there I have 2 choices "Create PDF/XPS Document" and "Change File Type".  If I choose the "Create PDF/XPS Document" it just allows me to save the Word document as PDF.  This is exactly what our 3rd party PDF printer produces.

All the above came with Windows - I did not install any PDF applications, apart from the Adobe Reader, which is free and always have been there for reading PDFs.

  • IIRC, Save as pdf  comes with MS office 2010/2013.. http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/word-help/save-as-pdf-HA010354239.aspx

For office 2007 to save a pdf plugin needed to be installed.. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7

It's a *MS office* feature and not Windows 8/8.1 feature.. Cute pdf writer (freeware)can be used for other applications if you want. ..

  • Oh, my apologies. You are absolutely right, it is part of the Office-2013 rather than Windows 8.1 package.  So, the only difference here is that it can be used throughout the Office files, but not any other types.

I should have really got that, but the jump from 2003 and XP to 2013 and Win 8.1 I was and still am overwhelmed.

    Thanks for clarification.
