KMS Setup Assistance

    Question

  • Hi,

I'm not sure which part of my KMS setup is not configured properly but i can't seem to get a Win 7 client (test client) communicating with my KMS host. I had our DNS admin add the DNS RR record and opened up Key Management Service in the Windows 2008 R2 firewall. When i run cscript slgmr.vbs /dlv all, i see the licensed service "licensed". I'm not seeing any communication attempts.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for your posting.

The common issue we see in support is that customers will use their KMS host key to activate individual KMS clients. With Windows XP/2003 a volume license key was used on each computer when you install. So when you apply this same process to Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 R2 you will encounter this issue.

The KMS host key should only be installed on your KMS host. The key allows for 6 activations on different hardware and 10 activations on the same hardware. This is so that you can rebuild your KMS host or move the KMS Host functionality to a new system. Everything will appear to work until you reach that seventh activation.

  • Vivian,

Thanks for clarifying my confusion with the KMS host key. After using the KMS Client Setup Key on my Windows 7 client, i'm seeing 1 request on my KMS host now, and assuming it will activate after it received 5 requests.

    Thanks,

    Kenny
