Unsupported File Format

    Question

  • I'm getting a large amount of files in my environment that suddenly have issues opening in Excel Web App.   They all say the file is in an unsupported format or corrupt.   However the file opens fine in Excel 2010.   And some of them are VERY simple sheets with just a list of numbers no graphics or calculations.   Is anyone else seeing this or facing this?

  • I have moved the libraries away from using Office Web Apps until there's a richer feature set included.

  • Hi John,

The issue may be caused by that The Session in Excel Service. So I suggest you try to Restart the Excel Service on your server. you can try to estimate performance and capacity requirements for Excel Services as the following article:

  • We have applied the December 2011 CU to Sharepoint 2010 SP1 and the December CU to the Office Web Apps SP1.   Neither has helped.   I'm just seeing an increase in Web App Compatible documents I guess.

  • Typically there will be a corresponding Office update as well, try using Windows update to see if the updates are available.

In the event you have an plugin that got corrupted a reinstall should work.
