Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 upgrade path
Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 upgrade path
- I'm already a little annoyed that there is no "R2" full install disk. I have to install Configuration Manager 2007 SP1, and then upgrade to R2. Now that SP2 is out, I'm even more annoyed because it's an upgrade as well!
So do I still need to install SP1, upgrade to R2, and then upgrade again to SP2?
Are all of the R2 features included in the SP2 upgrade?
Can I just install SP1 then upgrade to SP2 and skip the R2 install?
Is there anyway to slipstream all of these updates into a base install package so I can deploy the latest version of the console to helpdesk machines without all the upgrading?

- R2 is a feature pack which costs extra, and not part of the basic SCCM product. The R2 features are not included in SP2 which is a service pack, not a feature pack.
And yes, you can skip R2 and go straight from Sp1 to SP2.
I haven't heard of a way to slipstream SP2 into the complete SCCM SP1 install, but hopefully there will be a complete package available in the future :) But if you just want the console you can install this from the SP upgrade. In fact, if you try to run the upgrade on a desktop OS your only choice will be to install or upgrade the console.- Proposed As Answer byJason SandysMVPWednesday, November 04, 2009 11:58 PM

- R3 will include R2 features. You will need to install R3 on all consoles, just like you have to do so today with R2.

- Oh, ok, that explains the difference between "R2" and "SP2". So for those helpdesk workstations, should I just install the console directly from the SP2 upgrade, then apply the R2 feature pack upgrade afterwards?
- Correct, and unless you use the R2 features on your servers you don't need R2 on your helpdesk consoles either.

- There will be a slipstreamed version of SP2 sometime in December. There already is one, but it is the eval version, which is perfectly safe to use in a production environment. You can then 'upgrade' the eval version to the full version (non-eval) within the 180 days of the eval life, and all will be good.
To reiterate, SP1 and SP2 upgrades that you would apply to an RTM site. You upgrade the site, admin consoles, and clients.
R2 is *not* an upgrade, but a set of add-ons that you apply to admin consoles only. It can be applied to either SP1 or SP2 (not RTM).
Wally Mead - That's great! Having that slipstreamed SP2 version will help me a lot. I'll keep my eye out for it next month.
Do you have any idea if the same rules will apply to the upcoming R3 feature pack upgrade? What I mean is, will R3 include all of the features of R2? I'm hoping that in the future, new console installs will only require the SP2 install, with the R3 feature pack install. Or is it still too early to know? - Thanks for the clear answer on installing SP2 vs. R2 and what order. I'm building a new SCCM 2007 server/site from scratch alongside my 2003 environment (to eventually replace 2003) and was trying to figure out what exactly to download from MVLS and what order to install them in since as of this writing Microsoft hasn't bothered to update its own documentation on R2 supported install paths (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc161851.aspx)
Btw, SCCM 2007 slipstreamed with SP2 is available on MVLS now, I'm in the process of downloading it at the moment. - R3 will include R2 features. You will need to install R3 on all consoles, just like you have to do so today with R2.

- Yup, I was told that it got posted last week, so feel free to download the slipstreamed version, provided you have access to the MVLS site :-)
