It is possible to only monitor software usage in one OU or one collection? I want to see how many of the apple users are actually using the windows side of their machine by monitoring explorer.exe but my server does not have the resources to enable AI on the whole domain.

I think you might be confusing AI reporting and Software Metering.

If you want to meter explorer.exe, I think you can enable that metering rule for your entire domain.  Metering is pretty light-touch, especially if you set the metering client agent to be fairly infrequent, like every 4 days or weekly or something.  Remember, metering isn't meant to be real-time anyway, but to help you with trending.  weekly is usually more than adequant to get trending data.

I think I also read that a metering rule you might want to check out could be enabling the .scr (Screen saver) kicking in.  If a box is only off screen saver less than an hour a week, that might be a decent clue of inactivity as well.
