AnswerProblems with Windows 2000 Clients

Is there a AI limitation for W2K Clients/Server? On all W2k SCCM SP1 Clients the following errors appear in the AssetAdvisor.log:
Failed to open to WMI namespace '\\.\root\ccm\invagt' (80004002)
    Failed opening namespace \\.\root\ccm\invagt (80004002)
Failed to get InstalledMS product codes(80004002)
Unable to get the SMS_InstalledSoftwareMS Info 0x80004002
Unable to get the SMS_InstalledSoftwareMS Info 0x80004002

So if I look in the resource explorer, the Installed Software MS class is not there on any of the w2k clients.

The other thing I noticed is, that on a W2k Server where a SQL Server 2000 is installed, the product SQL Server is not listed under "Installed Software" if I look in the Resource Explorer for this Server.

    thx

AI doesn't have any specific client limitations and by that i mean that all AI requirements are derived from SCCM. Now, in this case, it appears your clients are too old and don't meet the minimum requirements for SCCM 2007.

I ran a quick search online and found this:

    SMS Client Software Requirements

    • Windows 2000 SP4 or later
    • Windows XP SP1 or later
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack (SP) 1 or later
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2
    • All SMS clients require Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later

You should verify with the product docs but based on this it seems that you need to upgrade your clients to at least the minimum for this to work. If you do so and still run into a problem, it might be a bug and then you'll need to engage CSS and log one, but given the age of these clients, approving it would be pretty hard.

In that case, it might be a bug or some client specific issue in that environment. I'd guess something local but it could be a bug (although it's the first time I'm hearing of it but it is possible). Given this, I'd suggest opening  a support case with CSS. If it is indeed a bug, they will credit the account and not charge for the incident.

All of the W2k machines, both servers and clients, have SP4 and IE6 installed so all requirements are fullfilled from my perspective...

Sadly, I'm not able to force this customer to upgrade all of the w2k machines in the near future Wink

    hi
Try to Install SMS clients v. SMS 2003 SP3 (2.50.4253.3000) onto Windows 2000 Prof. Systems...
AI WMI classes are created successfully by this version of SMS client.
