We published one new Knowledge Base article on System Center Configuration Manager 2007 last week. This one is about a hotfix for an issue where the SMS_Executive service process (Smsexec.exe) may consume high CPU resources on a Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) site server. The CPU usage on the CPU can be up to 100%:

Over on the System Center blog Jeff Wettlaufer just posted a great piece that clears up some of the apparent confusion that exists surrounding our recent announcements concerning Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 and Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 support. Specifically, we’ve had some questions about what SP2 offers given we have stated in the past that SP2 was the only supported release and Jeff does a great job of clearing this all up:

I know I've mentioned the hotfixes before but we have a new general support statement about how System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 now supports the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems for client installation. Support for App-V 4.5 and WSUS 3.0 SP2 is also discussed.

If you’re using ConfigMgr 2007 SP1 and have already moved to Windows 7 and/or Windows Server 2008 R2 you’ve probably noticed that they’re not listed as supported platforms. Well that all changes today as we just released a new update that enables you to add them. This update is not required to support a client. It is required only if you want to use the "SMS Platforms" setting for the software distribution, software update management, and desired configuration management features. However, we recommend that you apply this update.

Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 beta is now available

For those of you interested, the beta release for Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 is now available on the Connect site. This is for *lab* deployments only, not supported in production.

You can find all the details as to what the SP2 release will include from the Connect site. If you have not already joined this open beta, feel free to do so.

Support will be via the beta newsgroups, *not* here in the public forums.

Microsoft User Research is conducting a study focusing on design ideas for the next version of System Center Configuration Manager from March 11 to March 16, 2009. This is a great opportunity for System-Administrators to provide feedback and help improve the user experience of the next version of System Center Configuration Manager.

You can participate in this study from anywhere in US (at home or work). We highly value your feedback and will be offering you a gratuity option in appreciation of your time and participation.

We are recruiting individuals:

· Who work with SMS/System Center Configuration Manager to distribute software OR use some other application to distribute software to groups of computers

· At least 500 computers at your organization are managed by you

· Who have not participated in a user research study in past 2 months

· Are based in US and can spare around 1 and half hour to participate in the study

Calling all MMS 2009 Attendees!

The Configuration Manager writing team has developed a new interactive content model that we call the SuperFlow, that some of you might have heard about. A SuperFlow is a downloadable tool that provides troubleshooting, process flow and other data flow information in an interactive format. We have several of these currently in development covering Configuration Manager topics such as Soiftware Updates, Operating System Deployment PxE Installation, and Client Installation Troubleshooting. Other Windows and System Center teams are also beginning to develop SuperFlows to support their products.

We would like to demonstrate the work we’ve been doing on this model – and get your feedback! - at this year’s MMS by scheduling a Birds of a Feather (BoF) Session. Here’s where we need your help!

BoF Sessions are selected through the vote of registered attendees. If enough folks select a session, then it gets scheduled. There is no obligation for you to actually attend the sessions you vote for. If you think this SuperFlow session would be of interest and value to yourself or other folks attending the conference, please vote for it by:

1. Signing into the MMS 2009 CommNet site using your credentials

2. Clicking BoF Survey from the menu on the left

3. Selecting “Configuration Manager SuperFlow Showcase” from the Commonly Requested Topics drop down list (should be the third from the top)

4. Enter in some text in the Proposed Abstract text box (like “Show me the SuperFlow”), or any other specific information you’d like to see about SuperFlows.

5. Then click submit.

* You can optionally include your name and/or email before submitting.

Configuration Manager 2007 R2 RC is now available

Here's what a number of you have been waiting for - the RC build of the R2 release is now available on the connect site (https://connect.microsoft.com/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=12988&SiteID=16).

It is the eval version, which I believe only works on an eval version of SP1 (and only the RTM release of SP1, not any pre-release builds).

Does anyone got an idea when SCCM r2 will be released on MSDN? On some forums I saw that the release date was targeted for 1 october, but I don't see it yet. Also I cannot use the Eval version of R2 on an MSDN licensed SCCM SP1..

Configuration Manager 2007 can now be monitored with Operations Manager 2007, Microsoft released the management pack last week.

Below a list of some items that are monitored:

• Monitoring the starting and stopping of all Configuration Manager 2007 services, including critical dependent services like Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), IIS Admin Service, World Wide Web Publishing Service, Windows Deployment Services Server, Trivial FTP Daemon, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and Microsoft SQL Server™.
• Alerting the Configuration Manager 2007 administrator to critical Configuration Manager 2007 status messages.
• Monitoring backlogs of discovery data records (DDRs), software inventory, hardware inventory, status messages, state messages, and software metering on both primary site servers and management points.
• Monitoring outbox backlogs on site systems.
• Monitoring a component and site system role health.
• Monitoring collection evaluation, state message summarization, and site maintenance tasks, including site backup.
• Monitoring SMS Executive crash dumps.
• Monitoring general CPU, Memory, and Disk system resource usage. • Monitoring processing rates.
• Monitoring the performance trends of many Configuration Manager performance counters by using views and reports.
• Product knowledge content for all alerts and processing rules.
• Detecting all Configuration Manager 2007 computers, classes, and computer groups.

• Reports displaying performance, availability, and configuration of Configuration Manager 2007 server groups. These linked reports leverage the enhanced reporting of Systems Center Operations Manager 2007 for performance, configuration, and availability trends.
• Tasks for executing Configuration Manager 2007 Administrator console applications.
• Computer State view containing the health of all Configuration Manager 2007 server roles and the Configuration Manager 2007 Client.
• Site Hierarchy and Site State views for displaying the health of sites in a hierarchy and the hierarchy itself.
• Service Discovery of important Configuration Manager 2007 server and Configuration Manager 2007 client information.
• Topology diagram of the Configuration Manager 2007 site hierarchy.
• Configuration Manager 2007 configurable alerting on distributed program execution failure through Configuration Manager 2007 program properties.

Here's a heads up on an emerging issue that you'll want to be aware of:

Issue: The upgrade to ConfigMgr 2007 Service Pack 1 may fail and result in an unexpected restart and post-upgrade SMS Executive service crashes. For example, SMSEXEC may crash with the following in the CRASH.LOG file:

Exception = (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION)
Description = "The thread tried tc0000005 o read from the virtual address 00000080 for which it does not have the appropriate access."

The HMAN.LOG file may also contain the following:

Processing site control file: Site NAM File I:\SMS\inboxes\hman.box\RD7O7OF1.CT2
SMS_HIERARCHY_MANAGER 7/3/2008 5:44:54 PM 6096 (0x17D0)

System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 has been released!

Just wanted to let you all know that we released SP1 of System Center Configuration Manager 2007 today. The upgrade download should be posted on the System Center Configuration Manager TechCenter site within a few days (though someone just told me it was slated to hit on the 27th (not sure why it would take that long) of this month).

Anyway, look for it sometime soon :-)

For reference, this is a new server and client version, so all need to be upgraded.

And you will need to upgrade to SP1 in order to use the Configuration Manager 2007 R2 features (they require SP1).

SP1 itself includes:

* rollup of hotfixes since RTM

* support for Windows Server 2008 as a site system (including the site server)

* Intel AMT integration

* Asset Intelligence 1.5

Happy downloading :-)

Update: the upgrade and evaluation versions have been posted now, so you can now start your upgrades in production :-)

The ConfigMgr chm hotfix is LIVE on the download center

The ConfigMgr team published its first ever hotfix update to the chm on the box. You can go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=81997356-7f18-48b2-a53a-d6f995a47f35&DisplayLang=en to download the x86 or x64 English version. (No localized versions are planned for release; international customers will get all the current changes localized along with the next service pack.)

You can install this only on a computer that already has the ConfigMgr console installed. We look for the old version of the help file and replace it with the new version. But after you do the update, when you press F1, you get the fresh, new version. Topics updated since RTM say either Topic last updated—August 2008 or Topic last updated—November 2008. There are also topics that show the content changes in the August and November editions of the content. The content in this hotfix chm is the same as the content posted on the TechCenter at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680651.aspx.

The Configuration Manager Documentation Library on TechNet has been updated for November. Many of the updates were added directly in response to customer requests and comments and questions that we saw here.

For a list of the new or updated topics, see "What's New in the Configuration Manager Documentation Library for November 2007" (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb892811.aspx). New and updated topics also say "Topic last updated—November 2007" so if you see a conflict with a previous version, trust the later date.

Discussions about a printable format are underway but no news there.

An updated November chm is still in the works but not available at this time. We’ll keep you posted when we have that ready to download.
