Recurring Backup Problem

I have a recurring problem with the SCCM backup task. Every few days, after the backup starts, the SMS_SITE_BACKUP service hangs (doesn't shut down automatically) and the last line in the smsbkup.log file is "Info: Starting Asynchronous DoSnapshotSet...". The backup never finishes and we have to manually stop the SMS_SITE_BACKUP service and restart the server to get backups to start working again. Then, a few days later it will happen again. Last time, yesterday, we restarted the server and the backup still failed last night.
Any ideas on why this service is getting hung up?
Thanks in advance.

Friday, May 04, 2012 2:21 PMHave you installed the hotfix described in KB981640 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981640)? It fixes at least a couple of issues with backup and may also resolve the problems causing your symptoms.

I hate to do this, but it ran great for a few weeks now its doing it again. Same symptoms. SMS Backup service didn't shut down on its own and the smsbkup.log shows the last line as:
Starting Asynchronous GatherWriterMetadata. @ 6AM
... we manually shut down the process at 11:30AM. Successful backups usually finish in ~45 mins. Perhaps not coincidentally, we patched this server with May's patches on the evening of 5/24. The last successful backup was the morning of 5/24.
