Dear All,
The short version:
How can I use disk cloning in an SMS 2003 environment?
Specifically, if the source installation (resealed / syspreped image) has
advertisements already installed that are mandatory in our environment, how can I
avoid that these will be installed again on the destination machine?
The long version:
We are working in an Windows XP, Server 2003 environment where imaging and
software installation of client computers is done using SMS 2003. The central
department that creates the base images is however rather slow in doing so. Which
means that each time we are imaging a machine many advertisements have to be run
to bring the installation up to date.
In an attempt to make our support department a little more responsive when it
comes to turning out fresh installs I tried the following: I built a machine relying
on the 'official' procedure, i.e. I imaged the machine, then ran all
advertisements and applied all universal qc procedures. Then I used Sysprep to
seal the image for an unattended install. After that, I pulled an image from the
disk using Acronis TI.
Applying this image to another machine went well at first glance. Yet after a
while the machine started responding very slowly. The reason for this was that
the mandatory advertisements that exist in our location were coming down on the
machine "again". Remember, all those ads were already installed on that machine before I
pulled the image. Also, Run Advertised Programs the ads were listed as
'successfull'.
Our advertisement are assigned to users and machines alike. In the above case all
mandatory ads were pulled a second time. There was no difference between those
assigned to users and the ones assigned to machines.
Of course, my question is, how I could avoid this. Perhaps I should not sysprep
the machine but clear the old SID, GUID and some other stuff (Which?) in
different ways.
Thank you very much in advance!
