    Hope someone can give me some insight on an issue I have been struggling with for months. We are in the process of rolling out Windows 7 using OSD. The primary site server is 32-bit Server 2003 R2 SP2 with ConfigMgr 2007 SP2 R2 in native mode. The site database is also installed on this box. Our WDS service, multicast, PXE, management point, server locator point, fallback status point and distribution point are all installed on a Windows Server 2008 R2 member server.
     
    As a bit of background we do not store any user data on client computers so all our OSD installs are of the "wipe and reload" variety, whether through PXE or invoked through Run Advertised Programs - we do not use USMT in the Task Sequence. 99% of the time everything is working fine, however we have a certain type of computer which 9 times out of 10 will fail the task sequence at "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr". When these systems perform a restart during this step, the task sequence tries to start the OSD GINA but then drops back to the Windows 7 logon screen. It seems that at this point the machines are unable to invoke the installation of the ConfigMgr client. They have successfully joined the domain and acquired their ConfigMgr Computer Certificate before this happens. Here is the end of the SMSTS.log from one of these systems:

    If we logon to one of these clients and repair the ConfigMgr client it fixes itself and becomes fully functional. I'm really unsure where to go with this now and could really do with some advice. Other things we have tried are:
    • Using the drivers built into the Windows 7 install media
    • Using the manufacturers drivers
    • Updating to all the latest Windows 7 drivers
    • Updating the BIOS
    • Trying installation in both IDE and AHCI mode
    • Moved the majority of site systems from the site server to the 2008 R2 server

    It seems that's a certificate issue. Could you check the computer cert?

    I checked the certificate and everything seemed fine. We decided to revert the site to Mixed Mode in order to rule out any issue with certificates from our CA. After waiting 24 hours I have ran an OSD deployment again and the Task Sequence has failed again with the same error as above.

    In further testing I put a "Restart Computer" step in before "Setup Windows & ConfigMgr", this was set to boot back into WinPE. After restarting the error "Windows PE initialization failed with error code 0x8009005" is thrown, stopping the task sequence again. Seems to be after the first restart that things start to go wrong.     We are still battling with this issue, the frustrating thing is it the Task Sequence works with all our hardware but this one system, a Clevo L390T all-in-one unit with the Intel GM45 mobile chipset. I have tried every combination of drivers available but nothing has helped, the dropping out of the Task Sequence is also very intermittant.

    Does anyone know of a way to increase the detail level of smsts.log so that we can get more detail on the cause of the problem? Also, is it possible to manipulate the Task Sequence to have multiple retries of resuming the task sequence after the "Setup Windows and ConfigMgr" step?

    Hi,

    Didi you find a solution? I have the exact same problem with a HP Mini 5102 both x86/x64 deployments fail with 0x80090005. All other hardware model have no problem.
