AnswerOSD images crashes on logon after sound driver install

Hey guys this one is driving me nuts I'm hoping you can help. I've got an XP SP3 image that I captured from an Intel Core 2 machine which happily deploys to various models of Core 2 desktops without an issue. My task sequence installs only the best matched compatible drivers and to be honest everything has gone OK, until... I try to use the same task (with the Core 2 image) on a Pentium 4 machine. The image and packages install correctly, but the sound driver is missing - not a problem I download the latest sound driver from HP import it onto SCCM, re-image the machine. It all goes well until I try logging on the machine... it crashes when trying to play the windows logon music! I boot the machine up in safemode, remove the sound driver go back into normal mode and can logon to the machine fine without errors (and obviously without sound). This happens for various models of P4 machines with different sound drivers (all latest drivers from HP). So I'm now thinking it's a chipset problem because I'm using the Core 2 image on a P4 desktop - should I need a different image for different Intel processors? Any ideas?

    Many thanks,
    Matt

Hmm... built my new XP SP3 (x86) image from scratch on vmware server (ESX 3.5) and captured it from the capture media I'd created within SCCM. It all seemed to go well and I can deploy the image as part of a new task sequence however the newly imaged desktop gets halfway through booting into XP before crashing out and restarting. I'll provide more details tomorrow when I'm back at work, I'm thinking it must be a driver issue, but in the meanwhile does anyone have any ideas? The task sequence includes all of the drivers required by the desktop.

    Thank you!

build your original XP image on a hyperV or vmware host and use that WIM image to deploy to your real machines, that way you won't haave to worry about HAL issues

Thanks Niall I appreciate you answering my question - it seems so obvious now :) BTW I've your site is really great thanks for all of the effort!

If anyone reads this tread you'll need the vmware scsi driver found here: http://download3.vmware.com/software/vmscsi-1.2.0.4.flp

if you disable all the drivers in the task sequence does the image install, if so you should go through each driver one by one to verify which is causing the problem, at what point is it crashing ?

thanks Niall I guess that's the next logical step, I'll go through it at work tomorrow and see how I get on. The image installs fine, it falls over on boot up 5 seconds or so after the POST screen just before the Windows loading screen. It's a shame I can't get into safemode to help solve it, I'll go through it step by step - it's going to be a long day. Meanwhile if anyone's had similar problems with vmware images I'd love to hear how you solved it :)

    Chers

also check SATA/ATA/ACHI mode in the bios to rule out the usual suspect in XP installs (select ATA in bios or Compatible)

what Desktop model is this and did you use the latest vmware server to build the image ?
