Download interrupted from BDP
- Hi,
I am deploying SCCM to an environment that includes many small remote offices with limited bandwidth.
Within the remote offices I have set up desktop computers to act as BDP's.
We have certain scenarios where users arrive in the branch offices with 15 minute time windows to connect their laptops to the network before leaving.
As I see it I will have issues here if I try to distribute large software packages. There will be times where users will disconnect their laptops before the package download is complete as as BITS is not being used in the connection to the BDP it will cause a failure due to an interrupted package download. The only way to make the client try again will be with a new mandatory assignment.
At this point in time Windows updates are not being deployed with SCCM and WSUS is being used. Due to the limited bandwidth of the WAN link, the client BITS throttling is configured to allow for updates downloading from central servers. This means that even if I installed BITS enabled DP's in the remote offices, I would still have issues with larger packages due to a very long download time.
Any comments about my understanding of the issues and work-arounds would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

- One thing that I would like to point out is that you could potentially up the BITS throttling if you replaced the BDP with a standard DP and you also use SCCM for software updates since the clients wouldn't have to download patches from the WSUS server, they would instead get them from the local DP.
Also this sounds like a good situation for IBCM.

Thanks for the reply John.
I thought there probably was no work around for this however unfortunately I am not in a position at this point in time to migrate the WSUS updates to SCCM due to the split IT support model in place.
I do have another question relating to the users in the remote sites and DP downloads.
If a user plugs their laptop in at one location and it was downloading from a DP and therefore using BITS, due to the brief time at the location there is a good chance they could shut down their laptop before the download had finished.
I assume that as it is a BITS download then when they connect back to the network the download will continue from where it was ?
If it does behave like this, what would happen if the next time the user connected to the network they were in another location. Would the BITS download continue from the previous DP or would a different local DP be used ?
