Block specific type file in attachment, Exchange Server 2010

    Question

  • Dear Friends....

I want to disable attachment of drawing files like .cdr, .dwg, .psd and so on... I have read some articles but i am not able to perform it properly. Is there something that i am missing in configuration ?

I am using Exchange Server 2010 Std. Edition on Windows Server 2008 Std. Edition. I have tried transport rule it works perfectly for microsoft products and other default file types.

Please tell me what to do to block file as attachment of third party or non microsoft products?

    Thanks

  • Hi
        1.
Enable Anti-Spam Functionality on a Hub Transport Server

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201691.aspx

    Enable-TransportAgent -Identity "Attachment Filter agent"
        Add-AttachmentFilterEntry -Name *.psd -Type FileName

      2. You can read this blog and set transport rule :”when an attachment is unsupported”

  • Attachment filter agent is only available on Exchange Edge servers. Do you have an Exchange Edge.

Otherwise file filterering can often be done in AV for Exchange.

  • Hi Lasse,

Thanks for ur response. I dont have Edge Server. I m sorry to say bt im nt much aware of Edge Server. can you guide me for Edge server or AV for exchange more for attachment filtering ?

As per my knowledge it controls mail flow which is coming from internet, let me also tell you that i want to control mails which are sent from inside organization, not coming from outside of organization. I want to control my internal users from sending drawing files of AutoCAD i.e. .dxf and .dwg format.

    Thanks

  • Hi Terence,

Thanks. Sorry to be late in replying. I have gone through all the three links provided by you. From the link of blog i have come to know that IFilter are available for different applications. I think given links are providing blocking of Incoming emails. I want to block outgoing mails, especially AutoCAD files, which includes .dxf and .dwg. I have searched for that on internet but i am not able to find any kind of filter for this.

I think the advice from Lasse may help me i.e. Exchange Edge Server or AV for Exchange. I also want your suggestion and guidence on this.

    Hope you will help me

    Thanks

  • Overview of the Edge Transport Server Role
Applies to: Exchange Server 2010 SP1

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124701.aspx

in short, Edge is a SMTP gateway that is designed to sit in DMZ, doing antispam and can also do AV if an AV product is installed.

If you will it's variant of HUB transport server, but instead haviing contact with AD Exchange HUB sync information to Edge periodically.
