Login Fails via Windows Group

    Question

  • Hi ,

    I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1) - 11.0.3128.0 (X64)  on     Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.2 <X64> (Build 9200: ) (Hypervisor) .

I created a login for a windows group .  When the user connects via Windows group , the authentication fails with

    the error ( Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 5.) .

I have tried this windows group ( for the same user) in another server ( SQL 2012 / windows 2008 or SQL 2008 / Windows 2008 ) , it works fine.

Also , when I create a login for windows login. It works fine as well.

Is there any known issue with SQL 2012 sp1 on Windows 2012?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi ,

there is some issue with the way the login is configured or the way you tried to login. There is no known issue as such as this is a basic thing

    State 5 means invalid userid.

How is the user trying to login? As long as he is part of the group, he just have to use windows authentication.
