Error submitting mail | Mail submission failed: error message: The SMTP host was not specified.

    Question

  • I have installed Exchange 2007 to coexist with our current Exchange 2003 system.
Everything in our exchange 2003 system is working properly, and exch2003 can send mail to exch2007. However, exch2007 CANNOT send mail to exch2003. Mail can leave my exch2007 to go to internet through the Edge server, but not internally through the Hub transport. I have checked and both of the Routing Group Connectors are there and properly configured.

When I run the Mail flow Troubleshooter, it gives me the error:

    Error submitting mail
Mail submission failed: error message: The SMTP host was not specified.

I have no firewalls or IPSEC between the machines. I have no smart hosts in any of my connectors or anything.

This is driving me nuts! Please help me!

  • Hi,

Can you telnet from the 2007 server to the 2003 server on port 25?

  • No, it says "connection closed by remote host."

I found that the admin that was here before me had relay and connection restrictions set up in the SMTP protocols on my exchange 2003 system. I took those off and I CAN telnet now.

Mail is also going through. Thanks so much for your help!

  • Might want to add the new server to the list of servers allowed to connect to the mx03 server rather than removing the rules altogether. Last thing you want is your server ending up as an open relay for spammers (or a botnet which ended up on your lan).
