HIS 2004 Client failing to connect using windows 7

    Question

  • Hi,

I've installed the HIS 2004 client onto a 32 bit windows 7 machine and setup the sponsor connection to point at a designated HIS 2004 server. When running display (His diagnostics) recieve 'WinAPPCStartup Failed, error F003'. The windows firewall has been disabled and I am able to ping the sponsored server

When setting up the client using HIS 2004 ON XP, 2003 2008 r1 & 2 I can confirm everything works. This looks like a compatibility issue with windows 7. I've since attempted installing the HIS 2010 client on the machine and recieve the exact same message.

Has anyone come across anything similar?

  • Yes, those are pretty ancient. SNA Server and Windows NT 4 have been out of support for quite some time.

The likely reason for the problem is that Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) support NTLMv2 authentication by default. Older Windows systems (such as Windows NT 4.0) do not support NTLMv2. To verify if this was the issue, you could try following the steps in the following article to add the LmCompatibilityLevel registry key and setting its value to 1.

After rebooting the Windows 7 system, you could try connecting to the SNA Server 4.0 servers again to see if the problem still occurs.

    Thanks...

  • HIS 2009 and HIS 2010 are supported on Windows 7. HIS 2004 is not supported on Windows 7 (or Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2) and has not been tested on any of these platforms. Therefore, we can't say for sure if it would work or what probelms you might encounter when trying this.

Since you also see the same error with the HIS 2010 Client, IU'd need more information about how the client is configured. For example, is SnaBase setup to run as an application or a Windows service. If running as a service, is it running under a user account or as LocalSystem.

Do you have any events in the application event log when the error occurs?

Does the SnaBase process stay running? If it is running as an application, you should have an icon in the SysTray thashows the sponsro server you are connected to if you hover over the icon.

We may need to see SnaBase and SNA Application traces captured using snatrace.exe that are enabled before SnaBase is started.

    Thanks...

  • It appears that you didn't include all the trace details or maybe not all the Internal trace options for SnaBase were enabled as I get a number of additional trace statements (of type Debug) when tracing my client. However, the following was traced near the end of the data that you provided:

open service failed, rc = 1060

In order to start the SnaBase service, the HIS client makes a call to OpenService (Win32 API), the return code of 1060 is defined as:

    ERROR_SERVICE_DOES_NOT_EXIST
    1060
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

You might want to try reconfiguring the client so that SnaBase runs as an application to see what is traced in that scenario.

If you do new traces, make sure that all 6 options are enabled on the Internal Trace tab for SnaBase. BTW - Was this trace from a HIS 2004 Client?

    Thanks...

  • Hi Stephen,

The snabase is in the list of services when running services.msc.

I can't see an option within HIS2010 to choose whether you run as a service or as an application like within 2004. In the configuration wizard it only has options for configuring the service to use this account

The trace files were created using the 2010 client.

I can create a new trace file with all options selected however the trace file will be very large. This forum allows 6000 characters to be posted and doesn't appear to have a option for attaching files. Is there a specific part of the trace file you want? Alternatively, is a way I can send you the trace file?

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • In the Configuration Tool, click Common Settings, then click the Advanced button that is below the Active Directory Support option and the Windows Service option. If you enable the "component as an application" option, this will configure SnaBase to run as an application instead of as a service.

Give this a try and if it doesn't work, we will figure out a way to get traces.

    Thanks...

  • Hi Stephen,

I'm afraid it didn't work. I see the host integration starting icon appear in the systray then I'm returned the 'WinAPPCStartup Failed, error F003' error message.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • Make surte that SnaBase is stopped and then enable all o fhte trace options for SnaBase and SNA Application in snatrace.exe. Zip up the resulting trace files and copy them to the following location:

I didn't have write permissions for the share you provided

    I've placed the files here:

  • Martin,

Can you run regedit.exe on the HIS Client system and go to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SnaBase\Parameters

Take a look at the Transports parameter and see if it has the following listed:

    SNAIP.DLL SNAIP6.DLL

If so, can you do the following and then re-test?

    1. Double-clicl Transports

    2. Delete SNAIP6.DLL so that SNAIP.DLL is the only thing left in the list.

    3. Click OK.

    4. Close the Registry Editor.

    5. If SnaBase was running, please stop the process and then retest. Otherwise, just retest to see if you get different results.

    Thanks...

    Stephen

  • Hi Stephen,

Afraid this didn't work, still recieve the same message.

I've restored the registry on the machine to include the SNAIP6.dll in the list

    Thanks,

  • Can you tell me the file version of snadmod.dll that you are using?

Go to the \Program Files\Host Integration Server 2010\system folder, right-click snadmod.dll, click Properties, click the Details tab to see the File version.

    Thanks...

  • Also, what OS is running on the backend HIS Server 2004 system?

The problem is shown in the napint1.atf (SnaBase intenral traces):

    InitializeSecurityContext  function returns-2146893054
    dwContextAttr = 0
    Return code from InitializeSecurityContext Send:80090302H
    dwRet = 0 , dwSendRet = 80090302 , dwRecRet = 0
    InitializeSecurityContext() failed, error 0

The call to InitializeSecurityContext is failing with error 80090302 (SEC_E_UNSUPPORTED_FUNCTION).

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa375506(VS.85).aspx explains what InitializeSecurityContext does.

    SEC_E_UNSUPPORTED_FUNCTION

A context attribute flag that is not valid (ISC_REQ_DELEGATE or ISC_REQ_PROMPT_FOR_CREDS) was specified in the fContextReq parameter.

Do you see any events on the backend HIS Server when trying to connect (for example, Event 705 in the application event log or any errors in the security log)?

If you can get a SnaBase trace from a working scenario that would be interesting to see for comparison purposes.

    Thanks...

  • Hi Stephen,

I've asked the personnel responsible for the HIS backend for the details you requested. I'll post them as soon as I get a response.

I've produced a working trace from a Windows XP professional machine using the HIS 2010 client. The results can be found on the following share:

    https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=0DF4F86462F874A0&id=DF4F86462F874A0%21132

When hovering over the SNA task item I see "Host Integration Server - 157.203.133.36 (NTLM) (Unsecure)

    The snamod.dll is version 8.5.4213.0

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • The file version confirms one suspicion that I had. You are not running the released version of HIS 2010. The released version is 8.5.4224.0. I thought that you might be using a pre-release version because we don't add the SNAIP6.DLL transport by default in the released version of HIS 2010. This was removed just before the release.

You can download the HIS 2010 Evaluation version to test with if you don't have a HIS 2010 RTM version available. It can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=18969.

  • Hi Stephen,

I've updated the client to use the evaluation version.

I'm afraid using this version produces exactly the same result.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • Hi Stephen,

It turns out we have some pre-historic servers. They are NT4 SP4 running SNA S4 which I'd imagine is no longer supported.

The question I'd ask would be why does this work with XP using the 2010 client but not Windows 7?

We do have some HIS 2006 Servers. I've tried connecting to them using windows 7 and the HIS 2010 client. I can confirm that I'm able to connect without any problems

Thanks for all your help, it has been really appreciated,

    Martin

    Thanks...
