RDS Licencing Questions

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

I have a single W2008R2 RDS server that is currently configured in Per Device licencing mode with 15 licences.  I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping someone can help with:

    1. Is there any way of using the server in a mixed Client and Device CAL mode?  I know I can add User CAL's in the Licencing Manager along with the existing Device CAL's, but I don't know how to assign them.  Does the server only assign User CAL's when all the device CAL's have been used, or is it a random thing, or does it never assign any User CAL's when in Device Mode?

    2. When I want to revoke Device CAL's I can only seemingly revoke a couple and the server then informs me I cannot revoke any more licences for about 6 weeks and that I should purchase additional licences!  Is this by design and does anyone know why?  I'm hoping to assign 3 User CAL's to users that move between offices and use different devices to connect to the RDS server.  I don't want them using all of my Device CAL's.

    Thank you

    Jonathan

  • Hi,

    Regarding your question:

    1. The server is only capable of being in one RDS licensing mode, which means that if you are mixing both licenses on a single server, it never assign any User CAL's when in Device Mode.

    2. A permanent RDS Per Device CAL issued by a license server is configured to automatically expire after a random period between 52 and 89 days, at which time the RDS Per Device CAL returns to the pool of available RDS Per Device CALs on the license server.

You can only revoke up to twenty percent of the number of RDS Per Device CALs of a particular version installed on your license server. I am not clear about the 6 weeks limitation. To verify the license issue, I suggest you contact a license specialist.
