Windows Defender service will not start

    Question

  • The service is set to automatic. I even tried to start it manually.

I tried setting the system variable %ProgramData%, no joy!

I could not find anything in the event log from Windows Defender

  • Correct

While going thru the event log I noticed that several programs could not access  the program Data directory.

I bit the bullet and just did a reset.  All is well now

  • What happens? Do you get an error message? If yes, which message do you get?

  • When I manually try to start service there is no error message. When I open windows defender, it says it can't run because service is not running.

I searched event log but could not find an event related to Windows Defender.

  • Hi,

Do you mean you can start it manually but it will stop at once?
