Call of Duty 4 / 5 input regression with KB2850851

    General discussion

  • Installing update KB2850851 on Windows 8 Pro introduces a drop in performance with Call of Duty 4 and Call of Duty World at War, while the game is open and moving the mouse in game, csrss.exe CPU usage will raise significantly and introduce a framerate drop during mouse movement inside the game. Uninstalling the update fixes this.

In my case, the issue seems to only appear with Roccat Kone XTD mouse (and possibly other high end gaming mice, but I don't have the resources to confirm that), but not with an inexpensive Logitech B110 or Apple MacBook Pro's trackpad. So far I have tried it on my Desktop PC and a MacBook Pro, both running Windows 8 Pro.

  • Install the WPT (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx), open a cmd prompt with admin rights and run this command for 60s when you get the frame drop and the high csrss.exe CPU usage:

xperf -on latency -stackwalk profile -buffersize 1024 -MaxFile 256 -FileMode Circular && timeout -1 && xperf -d cpuusage.etl

press a key to stop logging. Zip and upload the file to your skydrive and post a link here.

I'll look for the cause of the high CPU usage.

  • ok, Windows tries to power your monitor on (win32k.sys!PowerOnMonitor) and this causes some CPU usage to detect the rotation state (win32k.sys!QueryAutoRotationState/dxgkrnl.sys!DxgkQueryDisplayConfig)

I see you have 2 monitors:

    SyncMaster P2370H/F2370H/P23720HPlus;Magic P2370H/F2370H(Digital)

    ViewSonic VX2268wm

Try to disconnect the monitor that you don't use while gaming.

  • CPU usage of csrss.exe halved. Now it has around 10% with Roccat Kone XTD and still 0-2% with logitech B110.

In the meanwhile I have heard of two more cases with exact same issue.

  • can you please make a new trace? I want to see the improvement.

  • it is still the same, only the CPU usage is a bit lower.

Do you have links to other users with the same issue?

  • One asked me through IM and other one from forums http://www.tek-9.org/forum/software-61/fps_drop_promod_please_help-126552.html

As far as mice go, both seem to use Razer products.

Only other device I can test/sample is MacBook Pro, would that help?

Edit: Another person came to ask from me via IM, this time the input device is logitech g500.

  • Are you seeing performance changes in any other games or is it only Call of Duty?
    Wednesday, July 17, 2013 10:17 PM
  • I haven't noticed it anywhere else nor has anyone else. So far I know that Call of Duty games are only affected.

  • Ingramz,

It would not be too inconvenient could you please post a performance log similar to the others with the update installed, but with your Logitech mouse attached instead of your Razer?

  • It's up right next to others. Used two monitors for a better effect (read: I'm just too lazy to unplug it).

  • More and more people are showing up with the issue. It looks like other Call of Duty games also suffer from this issue.

  • From today there is a new update to avoid (something that installs 2850851 automatically).

  • Update KB2862768 install a newer version of win32k.sys (which causes your issue). So remove this update as a workaround.

How long does this fixing process usually take?

  • I have no idea. I only got the reply that MSFT investigates the cause. If this is urgent, phone the Support, too.
