Wireless USB Adapter behaviour - Cannot Remote Desktop TO a desktop PC that has Wireless USB Adapter?
-
I am using a Netgear Wireless-G WG111 USB 2.0 Adapter on a desktop with Vista. It seems that when i log off, i can no longer ping the computer.
Can someone please confirm if the following are expected behaviours of Wireless USB Adapters in general:
1) only get their IP Address when you are logged, and loose it when you are logged off?
2) therefore i cannot Remote Desktop TO the PC with the Wireless USB, because as soon as i do, it disconnects the currently logged on user, thereby loosing its IP Address.
Thanks.

Hi,
Based on my knowledge, Windows Vista cannot keep IP Address after logging off current user.
However, you can choose to use Fast User Switching as a workaround.
For more information, you can refer to the following link:
Behavior of RAS Connections With the Fast User Switching Feature

Hope it helps.

Thank you for your reply. However Fast User Swiching was of no help, same issue exists; Doing a fast user switching takes me back to the Welcome / Login screen; when i Log back on (whether as a new user or original user), it takes a few seconds for connectivity to be established again. Don't know if using Server 2003 will be any different, i will try it and post back results when i can - hopefully it will be better, otherwise Wireless sucks ! (or rather this particular model WG111).

Hi,
Thank you for your update.
According to above KB, the computer should “stays connected” if “RAS - save password for Anyone”. Given the current stage, I suggest you contact NETGEAR to check whether there is a specific setting for Windows Vista on their side.
Thanks.

I have the same problem with Windows 7 64-bit.
desktop with a Belkin usb wifi adapter.
Remote desktop connection is working fine, but there is no connection anymore to internet.
When we stop the Remote desktop connection. connection is back on the desktop.
I've tested this with other laptops and this was the same problem (with Intel wlan card and Broadcom wlan card).
any ideas?
