Hi, we have installed dpm 2010 on a server in one forest and we are trying to install the agent on a server in a different forest. The forest has a two way transitive forest trust.
One forest is 2008 and the other forest is 2003. The server that we are trying to send an agent to is a windows 2008 servers. we get the following message when we try to install the agent locally:
amd64\DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe servername.fqdn
Installing agent and configure for dpmserver =[domain\servername]
DPMAgentInstaller failed with errorcode =0x800706fc, error says: The trust relat
ionship between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed.Check log files in [WINDIR]Temp\MSDPM*.LOG
Press Enter key to close the windowAs mentioned earlier the trust is there and and the firewall ports seem ok and nothing really of interest in the log. anyone come across this before?
Thanks

This post is going to be locked because you are in the wrong place, I have not tryed what you are doing but usually if you go to a new domain/forest you need to make sure your install account in the DPM domain has local admin rights in the agent deploy domain.
Best wishes

Is it possible for you, to do a manual agent install on the 2008 server.
You can find the agent exe [DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe]
at this location : %DPM Install Path%\DPM\ProtectionAgents\RA\[versionNo]\amd64.
copy DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe to your 2008 machine (the to be protected server and execute this from teh commandline as :
$commandPrompt$>DPMAgentInstaller_x64.exe DPMServername.fqdn
and it should succeed.

Hey,
I'm assuming this will have something to do with the user account you are trying to install.
1. Could you try to push the agent from the console and choose different credentials to install it on the machine. You can find an example in this post:
http://scug.be/blogs/scdpm/archive/2010/02/22/getting-the-client-protection-working.aspx (I know it is for a client but the procedure is the same for a server)
2. If you can't do this because of firewall issues, can you install the agent manually with an account that has local admin rights on the server and also admin rights in the other domain, just to verify that it is not a rights issue blocking the installation
Just my 2 cents
Cheers,
Mike Resseler

To protect Server across domains in different forest using DPM you must have
two-way trust
between these domains of type "Forest Trust".
Trust between your forests would probably be "External Trust" forest trust is possible only for domain level Windows Server 2003 and above.
DPM doesn't support "External Trust"
To know more about "Forest Trust" check following articles

hi Phil,
correct me if i am wrong but you want to use the forest trust mechanism and not the workgroup/non trusted domain option?
when you use the trust option, i thought you had to assign the dpm servers computer account some rights on the protected servers computer account.
To Protect a Server Across forest with Selective authentication, "Allowed to
Authenticate"
permission have to be given on AD for following computers:
1. Give "Allowed to Authenticate" permission to DPM Server On "Domain
Controller" of domain of "Server to be protected".
2. Give "Allowed to Authenticate" permission to DPM Server On "Server to be
protected".
3. Give "Allowed to Authenticate" permission to "Server to be protected" On
DPM Server.
4. Give "Allowed to Authenticate" "permission to Account used to install
agent" On DPM Server.
To find out wow to grant the "Allowed to Authenticate" permission on
computers in the trusting domain or forest
check following technet article
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738653.aspx
regards,
Alex
