  • WARNING: Failed to get Network Cost info from NLM, assuming network is NOT metered error = 0x80240037

This message is not necessarily an error at all - WUAgent is asking NLM "is the current network connection a 'metered' service, e.g. is it mobile broadband or some similar pay-per-megabyte, type of connection"

If you have configured Windows not to download updates via 'metered' connections, then WUAgent would honour that setting, and would not download updates over such a connection.

In this case, NLM did not advise of a metered connection, so, would download the updates.

It's unlikely to be relevant to your problem, I think.

What is the "mentioned patch" you refer to?

What are you current WU settings?

What else is revealed in windowsupdate.log ?

  • Hi,

    To add some more information:

What is the current version of your WSUS? I have seen such a error message in windowsupdate.log with WSUS 3.2.

With windows server 2012 clients you need apply the following update:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734608

    Hope this helps.

I fail to see how asking for more information constitutes an answer to the question.

Furthermore, KB2734608 has absolutely nothing to do with this WUA message.

Ergo, I have unmarked the response as an answer.

The "network cost - NLM" message is expected and normal - it's not an error, and can be ignored.

For your second issue (WS202R2 reporting as Win 6.3), it's been suggested (but not yet confirmed) that this is addressed by https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2938066

FWIW... I've seen sufficient empirical reports to believe that this is true for WSUS v3, but not yet for WSUS v6.

Still waiting on feedback from WSUS PG, but my guess is that the codefix (for WSUS v3) that was already completed, somehow leaked into the build, thus accounting for it failing to be documented.
