Deploy DFS to large enterprise

    Question

  • What is the best way to deploy Distributed File System (DFS)  to a large enterprise where you want user folders created for all domain accounts?  Is there a script or powershell script to create the namespace subfolders? or is this part of the setup possibly?

    For example:

    \\domain.contoso.com\user\john

    \\domain.contoso.com\user\beth

    \\domain.contoso.com\user\bob

    thanks!

Also, is there a way to change there documents folder to point to the \\domain.contoso.com\user\ with possibly a login script or home directory?

Answers

  • Then use Folder Redirection for 'Documents' with the option "Create a folder for each user under the root path" where the root path would be '\\domain.contoso.com\user\' - a subfolder for each user will be automatically created.

  • Thanks for the reply:

    1. Are you talking aboute DFS-N (Namespaces) here and not replication (DFS-R)?

DFS-N (we will only have one SAN storage location with multiple sites accessing that one storage location)

    1. Do you want to create DFS Links (DFS Folders) for each user, or just create folders within a DFS root target?

Create folders where users will keep their documents.  The folder will be labeled after their domain account.

    1. You can use Folder Redirection to point 'Documents' to an UNC path: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781907(v=ws.10).aspx

So FR is turned on by a GPO setting and directed by the UNC you use?

  • DFS-N root servers should NOT be domain controller to NOT interfer with SYSVOL, I recommend you to deploy at least two separate members servers that act as DFS-N root servers.

  • OK I'm standing up member servers.  Do I install the DFS role on the member server, not the Domain Controllers?

    Yes - Correct.
