  • Hello,

Please run the FindSQLInstalls.vbs script will tell you the real name of the MSI files, where is trying to find the MSI files, and the name the MSI files had in the cache.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969052

Put the SP1 media where script is trying to find it, and run the script again. You will see the script will recreate the MSI files for you. You can also copy the MSI files to the C:\Windows\Installer folder with the name they are supposed to have in the cache, as described by the output of the VB script file.

The same issue happened to me a few months ago when some of my teammates decided to free some disk space by deleting files from the c:\Windows\Installer cache. It is not a pleasant experience ...

If you don’t feel comfortable doing this or you don’t have any progress with this despite using the KB article, please call Microsoft Support and try to get assistance. They will try to do their best effort in this case because deleting files from the cache make the installation not supported.

    Hope this helps.

  • As suggested above as well, run the vbscript mentioned in the below article

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969052

After completion, it will generate a output with the missing MSI and MSP information’s including the path source and location path. Just copy the file and paste it with the given name on C:\Windows\Installer

For example, in your case you need follow below steps:

1.) Copy the vbscript in the server

2.) Locate the directory to which you saved the script content.

3.) Open a command prompt to the directory to which you saved the script, and run the following command:

    Cscript FindSQLInstalls.vbs %Outputfilename%_sql_install_details.txt

4.) It will generate an output with detailed information on the missing MSP and MSI files

5.) From the file one by one pick details

    6.) Like for Missing sql_engine_core_inst.msp

    Source: 10.1.2841.0 i.e Service pack SP1

    Extract the by using command:

    SP SQLServer2008-KBname-x64.exe /x: D:\foldername

    7.) Search for the sql_engine_core_inst.msp

    8.) Copy the file C:\Windows\Installer

9.) Rename the file to 3f9e306.msp

You need follow this for all the missing MSI and MSP and then the SP3 again

Also, if not comfortable than contact to MS :)

  • Hi Neha and Alberto,

I have supplied the required files after extracting it from the SP1 setup.exe to the windows installer.

But after running the SP3 setup.exe, I got the following error and I couldnt proceed further because of the same.

The setup is not corrupt as i have applied the same to other SQL servers as well.

    TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.

    ------------------------------

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

The system cannot open the device or file specified.

    Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Bootstrap\logs

Check if all drives are available and check for the permission on the SQL server.
