I have a client that all of a sudden Excel Temporary files are being written to the desktop and not being removed once the Excel spreadsheets are closed.
Where does on specify the location of the excel tmp files?

Hi,
When you save an existing file in Excel, Excel creates a temporary file in the destination folder that you specify in the Save As dialog box. The temporary file contains the whole contents of your workbook. If Excel successfully saves the temporary file, the temporary file is renamed with the file name you specify in the Save As dialog box.

As the OP said, these temp files are NOT being removed after the save occurs. Although the question was about save location, my question is: "What might be causing the tmp files to not be deleted after the save?" In my situation, the Excel files are properly saving, but leaving behind .tmp files instead of deleting them. This is occurring for all users in one particular folder in a network share on a server.
I've seen in other posts that this sometimes occurs due to anti-virus software such as AVG. We're not currently running AV software on the server, and I've already tried disabling AV on the workstation, but the error still persists when AV is not running. Are there any other possibilities or suggestions to try and resolve the .tmp file generation issue?
Thanks
Edit: I have found a possible solution proposed at Experts Exchange:
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/Windows_Server_2008/Q_26985536.html
I will implement this on our workstations and post back with results as to whether or not this resolves my issue.

The solution offered by Experts Exchange appears to have resolved the issue of not removing the .tmp files after saving. If anyone else is experiencing the problem, please make sure that the folder is not being indexed, especially in a network environment where the files are being accessed via a share.
Since the folder in which the Excel files were saved was on a server, I went into the server's Indexing Options from the Control Panel and excluded the folder to resolve the issue.
Thanks
