We have a remote user opening a 68 MB Excel XLS file over a WAN VPN link with Excel 2003 sp3.  It opens in 47 seconds but takes more than 7 minutes to save and when it saves the saved file stays the same size and leaves a Hung App error in the Application log.  For a test I opened the same 68 MB XLS file from the same location on a Windows 7 laptop with Excel 2007 SP2.  It took 2+ minutes to open but saved to a new file name over the VPN to the same location in 23 seconds.  I saved it as an XLS that was only 2 MB in size.  I also saved it to an XLSX (2007 format) file that was 1 MB in size.

The small saved files appear to be intact with links to other data in place.  Has anyone seen this?  Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

    Thanx,

    Mel

Looks like the file contains quite some file bloat. Try doing a save-as, file type html from Excel 2003, then close the file in Excel, open the html file in excel and save-as to normal workbook format.

    Hi Jan,

The customer is using you your solution.  I was waiting for them to report back to me but they haven't.   That means it's working.  Thanx and sorry for the delayed response.
