As the experts I thought I would ask your opinions!!

Our current mailboxes reside on Exchange 2000 Server as part of a large corporation. Our division is being sold off and I need to setup a new Exchange environment with new email addresses, etc....

I have read some articles which say you cannot migrate from 2000 to 2010. Is it worth going through the pain to get to 2010 or shall I migrate to 2007?

Are you starting fresh or is the existing AD and Exchange Org infrastructure being kept?

    Brian,

    Thanks for the reply.

Everything is starting afresh, so I am doing an AD migration for AD user accounts too.

You could use a temporary Exchange 2007 server in the new environment to move the mailboxes to. Use the Move-Mailbox cmdlet to move the mailbox from Exchange 2000 to the Exchange 2007 server in the new forest. After that you can move the mailboxes to Exchange 2010 and remove the Exchange 2007 server from the environment.

Remember that you need an Exchange 2007 server in your domain first if you ever want to use Exchange 2007. When you start with Exchange 2010 you can't add an Exchange 2007 server anymore.

I would recommend Exchange 2010 anyway, it's a great improvement compared with Exchange 2007. Especially the management interfaces, web interface, high availability scenarios and performance.

If you follow Jetze's approach, make sure that you deploy Service Pack 2 on your Exchange 2007 servers prior to the introduction of Exchange 2010.  As it is net new, you will want to do this before moving mailboxes onto Exchange 2007.  There are schema updates for Service Pack 2 which are the same as those found from an Exchange 2010 installation, therefore you will not have to re-run schema updates again after installing Service Pack 2.

I also vote for Exchange 2010 for the reasons Jetze listed and the enhancements to Unified Messaging (voice preview, additional language packs), IRM integration, role-based administration, ability to use Cheap DAS (SATA)...the list can go on and on.
