AnswerExchange 2010 RC1 Initialization Failed error in EMC

Re-Building my test environment for E2010RC1 and I'm getting an error in the EMC in my servers. The first time I saw it is when I built my Hub Transport and Client Access server (It also doubles as my DC and DNS server) (Not perfect but building the test environment on a limited budget) I also have 2 other servers I'll be installing the actual Mailbox server on. I actually built the first Mailbox server and it has the same error.

Error - Initialization Failed - The following error occured when getting role assignment information for "domain"\administrator: The role assignment method, User, isn't recognized. It was running the command....

I'm "sure" this is a permissions issue, but I can't figure out where. Any help will be appreciated...And if it's an obious fix that I should have seen, feel free to call me a dunb a**.

(The Administrators group is in the Exchange Trusted Subsystem role.)

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*** I have confirmed the removing Administrator from the group Exchange Organization Administrators fixes EMC access error ***

(And here I thought I'd have to add administrator to a grouop or role...go figure) Thank you for the fix!

Sorry leave the Administrator in that group but remove them from the group "Exchange Organization Administrators" and no reboot was required for me

Is Administrator account used to install Exchange server?

Can you verify that Administrator account is a member of "Organization Management" group? If not, add it...

I can confirm that user Administrator is in "Organization Management" group. I have two problems:
    1. OWA users getting "Your mailbox appears to be unavailable. Try to access it again in 10 seconds. If you see this error again, contact your helpdesk." message after login.
    2. EMC give me "(PID 4444, Thread 5) Task Get-ManagementRoleAssignment writing error when processing record of index 0. Error: Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Tasks.RecipientTaskException: The role assignment method, User, isn't recognized."

This error logged in Application log.

Does anybody have ideas where is problem. I had 2010 beta then upgraded without any warnings, everything was great. But now nothing works :(

LOL take the Administrator out of that group, that makes it work...

It has just fixed mine I think

Edit: I can confirm this fixes the error and I seem to have full access to the EMC now.

    Evgeniy,

How did you upgrade from beta to RC? Because B2B in-place upgrade is not possible due to store schema changes in RC and you may need to go for transition from Beta to another fresh E2010 RC server installation or uninstall Beta and install RC from scratch on the same server...

UH :( , what's possible to do now? Copy mailbox storage, disable mailboxes, uninstall exchange, do fresh installation ? As I noticed schema was upgraded during installation.

    LOL... :)

And are you able to perform org related task after removing admin account from that group? May be it made Exchange remote powershell to reinitialize the role assignment (however it does everytime and when EMC/EMS loades) or may be cleared the cached this time...

I am talking about store schema changes... :)

You can disable mailboxes, uninstall Exchange and install a fresh copy...

Btw, powershell console works. I can run commands there. How to get why OWA give error "Your mailbox appears to be unavailable. Try to access it again in 10 seconds. If you see this error again, contact your helpdesk."? I can guess that mailbox role not works correctly.

I checked Exchange services and all of them running now.

I guess this is because store schema changes and mailbox database is from beta build upgrade which RC store.exe doesn't interpret properly...

Sorry, this post is offtop, but I need help and you guys can help.

Now in EMC I see that mailbox database not mounted. When I'm trying to mount it I'm getting error. I agree that it's mailbox issue. Can you advice how migrate mailbox items?

Looks like this environment upgraded or migrated from Beta because RBAC doesn't have Exchange Organization Administrators group in fresh/native RC build hence this issue...

Yep, understood now because it is member of "Organization Management" group, it has all permission...

Can you please post full warning about KEYs?

The warning about the KEYs is just that it has 119 days to run etc, I would say a normal warning except I should have keys from Technet but dont seem to... yet

Ah, product keys. Yes, that would be available with RTM I guess, because RC is still for non-production use...

What's the error you get when mount the mailbox?

Well, I guess its a black hole situation and you won't be able to with RC.

You can build another environment with same domain name and Exchange organization settings with 2010 Beta, mount the database there and recover the data...

Or, depending on whats in it, if you stop the Exchange Information Store Service, delete all the files in the Mailbox directory where the Mailbox Database was and then start eveything it will create an empty one and then you could do a restore into it...

You can use database portability method since it is same Exchange org...

Use below cmdlet to set database of all mailboxes after restoring/moving database file on beta and then mount it (hope it is in clean shutdown state)

    Get-Mailbox -Database "RCDatabaseName" | Set-Mailbox -Database "NewBetaDatabaseName"

I am also having error #2 when attempting to get EMC to initialize after an install of Exchange 2010 RC server.  I have made sure that the user ID in question is in the Enterprise Organization Administrators group as well as the Organization Management group.  I don't know if this is related or not, but when we were attempting to resolve other issues, I removed the Exchange mailbox properties from this ID, but now I can't run the Enable-MailUser or the Enable-Mailbox cmdlets on that account.  It errors with a invalid recipient type for this object.  Any ideas?

Ok, I guess I misunderstood this post as it had so many parts to it, and I can see where this will be a problem for users that have the old Exchange Organization Administrators group that they are used to using in AD for previous versions of Exchange, including the Beta.  I was able to resolve the EMC intialization error by removing the ID that was used to install (and that I was logged in as) from the old Exchange Organization Administrators group and adding them into the Organization Management role group only.  Having them in the Exchange Organization Administrators group and having the Exchange Organization Administrators group nested in the Organization Management role group DOES NOT work!  You have to put them into the Organization Management role group specifically and remove them from the old group to make it work.  This seems like a bug since you should be able to have a group nested in the Organization Management role group, no matter what it is called and have it work.

I ran into issue over the weekend with my test install of exchange and spent the last 4 days trying to figure it out.

    Try this:

Change you Pre-windows 2000 login name to username@domain.net or .com   instead of just username. We had a pre-windows 2000 domain of domain.com and out internal domain was domain.net.

You can only make this edit using ADSI. Log out and log back in and it worked for us.

    Good luck.
