Answered Exchange 2010 additonal Contact list

Ok kinda complicated but here goes!

We are migrating from Groupwise and I am slowly migrating users to Exchange 2010, for the users I create a mailbox in Exchange I woul like them to to be able to mail our real world domain name emails address for example

    Our existing Groupwise domain email

    current.ac.uk

    Our AD/Exchange 2010 domain

    new.local

I actually have all the users imported into the new domain, but I have not created email accounts as yet, as in the GAL I dont want users getting confused as when they mail someone the mail will appear in the new domain not the old one, I cannot forward these onto Groupwise as at the moment any users I move over I have groupwise forwarding the mail onto Exchange so mails would end up looping, not to mention setting up 2000 forwarding rules for each user.

Basically I was hoping to just import an address list into Exchange 2010 that just held all 2000 users SMTP addresses in it, this does not seem possible without creating contacts, is there a way around this if the users exist in AD but they are not mail enabled in Exchange? Could I create another GAL?

    Any help welcome

Why don't you add current.ac.uk as a non-authoritive domain, with a send connector for that domain that forwards onto Groupwise?

Then, when you mail-enable an existing AD user, any mail sent to that address should end up in Groupwise. That should solve the GAL issues and also provide you a path to converting users to mailbox enabled users as and when you need them

    Hi Steve,

    Thanks for the reply.

At the moment all GRoupwise mailboes are still live even the few users we have migrated, so maill gets forwarded from Groupwise then onto Exchange, if I do it back again we would end up with an email loop.

If it finds the mailbox in the local Exchange system it won't forward it out to Groupwise. What you should do is make sure either Groupwise or Exchange is authoritive, so that unresolved addresses won't bounce between the two systems.
