Tuesday, May 22, 2012 2:42 AMQuick recovery question. we have a two year email retention policy in exchange 2010 that was setup last year when i migrated the mailboxes over. If i still have my old exchange 2003 server and it still has the exchange database files can i actually get emails out of the database file? Thanks.

If the mailboxes have been moved to 2010, and they have exceeded their disconnected duration they have been "deleted" by the exchange maintenance tasks. (also assumming the "dont permentantly delete items until the database is backed up" checkbox wasn't set.)
If you need to get data out, it may not be overwritten though. You could try a tool like http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp

You can try restoring from backups if they are available

If his Exchange 2003 has not been removed, he can restore the mailbox, then connect mailbox to do that.
Thanks,
Evan
