The old setup of Exchange 2003 was having servers geographically, as part of decommissioning old environment, I decommisioned Exchange server of all branch office and retained only one Exchange 2003 at head office, now client have a urgent requirement of restoring data of decommissioned server.

How can the data be restored to single retained server of Exchange 2003 while the information of old E2k3 is already removed as part of decommissioning.

Can anyone please help or provide any pointer.

Create a RSG Group and perform a restore.

Have the mailboxes from that old store been moved to 2010 already? If so, that will make things tricky and you wont be able to restore using the built-in 2003 recovery storage group if so without some monkeying.

I would actually use 3rd party tools in this instance like this if its urgent and keep things easy and clean.

the mailboxes has already been moved to E2k10.

I somewhere read to retain single Exchange server for restore purposes, and was hoping there could be any trick like we do for users who have been migrated to E2k7 as explained in http://msexchangeguru.com/2010/10/31/restore-mailbox-in-old-database/

can a flat file level restore, replacement of .edb/.stm on RSG and modifying registry help

the major pain I feel, could be related to missing AD information, as I don't want to feed any entry using ADSIEDIT as I fear I may accidently bring down the environment.

or the Recovery server is my best option in absence of 3rd party tool.

On the top of my head, yuo will need to know what exchange server/store they were located on, then you will have to change a few attributes, then exmerge out.

    Something like this http://www.petri.co.il/restoring-exchange-2003-mailboxes-exchange-2007-exmerge.htm

You wont be able to use Exmerge unless you mess with adsiedit to link up the mdb association. If you restore to the 2003 server as a regular restore and attempt to mount, it will fail unless change the server attributes in AD on the store to match the server

So, if you want complete isolation from production, I would build a recovery forest in the lab or go the 3rd party route.

To make this work you would need to clone the Exchange and DC box where the AD records for the mailbox you want to recovery are intact so that that you can mount the database and connect via Outlook to Export to PST OR to using ExMerge.  Also you want to ensure that you do this in a sandbox environment, i.e. do not keep it connected to your production network or very bad things will happen.

Another option as AD pointed out is to use a 3rd party product like Lucid8's DigiScope http://www.lucid8.com/product/digiscope.asp which does not require AD or even the Exchange server and will allow you to open any OFFLINE Exchange database and once opened you can Browse, Search Export Mailboxes, Folders and Individual items to PST, MSG & XML or if desired you can import/push data direct from an offline database into the original Production or any Alternate Exchange server even cross version i.e. 2003 --> 2007 --> 2010 etc.
