    Exchange 2010 SP2 UR2

We've had Exchange 2010 running a few months now with Retention Policy Tags - Age Limit for Retention set to 60 days on various folders. I've been instructed to change it from 60 to 180 days.

My question is, will the change from 60 to 180 days affect the email that has already been stamped as 60 days (meaning change them from 60 to 180 days) or will it only affect new emails after the change has been implemented?

    thanks,

    James

As the Managed Folder Assistant processes the mailboxes, it should stamp the messages with the current policy and the messages should get the 180 day rentention.

Key word you said there, "should", I guess I'm looking for a definitive answer. We have a certain group of staff here (around 400 people), that when the change is made, we want to make sure the 180 days does take effect on all their email, as well as everyone else, but mainly them.

Yes, I did read the "How Retention Age is Calculated", but that didn't answer my question. Good info in there though.

    thanks,

Ok,  well, I never say it "will" , cuz sometimes things dont work they way you expect, but you *should* be pretty confident it will.

As that article states, when a message is moved betgween folders with different retention, the expiration date is recalculated. The same applies in this instance as the assistant processes the mailbox.

As a follow-up: we created a test Policy and Policy Tag and set it to 180 days and applied it to my account, that worked just fine. We then edited the test Policy Tag from 180 to 360 days, and once again applied it to my account and that also worked.
