Error in establishing SMTP connection, Error: 504 5.7.4 Unrecognized authentication type

Hi
We have a 3rd party product that sends SMTP commands to the mail server. We are currently migrating from Exchange 2003 to 2010.
The product works fine with 2003, but sending the same information to 2010, produces "Error in establishing SMTP connection, Error: 504 5.7.4 Unrecognized authentication type". This is followed by "Error: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay"
Our IT people are at a loss and as I am not an exchange specialist (just a humble accountant actually) I was wondering if anyone had come across a solution that doesn't involve setting the exchange server to allow relaying?
Thanks

Hi,
You ned to create one receive connector at HUB trasnport server role to accept mail from third part product. See my below thread for more detail so you can proceed accordingly.
Some more information to how to create receive connector for application::

Exchange 2010 does not allow inbound unauthenticated mail by default. This applies to All mail, not just mail from your application. This is because Microsoft expects you to use an Edge Transport server. Because you are not, you need to adjust your default receive connector to allow "anonymous". This will allow inbound mail and will not make you an open relay.
See this article for more:

Hi,
You should allow relay for the Exchange server by creating one dedicated Receive Connector which only accept the email from third party product.
Allowing application servers to relay off Exchange Server 2007

That may seem like the obvious answer here, as it is what Anil stated as well, but if the emails are destined for internal exchange recipients this is not necessary or advised. This type of dedicated connector is only required when an appliance needs to use Exchange to send to the internet.
