Answered Connecting to Exchange 2010 using Apple Mail

    I'm currently in the middle of a conversion from Exchange 2003 to 2010. The connection to the 2010 server using Apple Mail worked yesterday, but does not work today. Tech support at my service provider (Intermedia.net) says that it does not work. They do not have an answer as to why it worked yesterday and not today.

    Has anyone successfully used Apple Mail with Exchange 2010, or do I go to 2007 and wait until Apple catches up?

    Apple Mail the client that comes with OSX supports standard protocols (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), these are all supported by Exchange 2010.  Out of the box, you have to enable IMAP and/or POP3 for retrieving mail on your Client Access Servers.  Please read the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124107(EXCHG.140).aspx

    As for SMTP which is the protocol that Apple Mail will use to send mail, you will point your Apple Mail client to the IP address of your HUB Transport server.  Out of the box your HUB Transport Servers have a client receive connector which receives mail on port TCP/587 (this is not the standard port for SMTP which is 25).  Also mail submission requires authentication by a member of the Exchange Users group (you have a mailbox in the organiazation).  For more information on this, please read: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996395(EXCHG.140).aspx

    To answer your question, Apple Mail will work with Exchange 2010.  You do not need to go to Exchange 2007.

    another Question to this Issue. Is it possible to use the "new features" like acess to Calendar and Mail using Apple Mail (snow leopard).

    Hi,

    I am using Apple Mail/iCal/Address Book (snow leopard) to connect to an Exchange 2010 server, works without any problems. The client applications do use EWS and not POP3/IMAP/SMTP, afaik you can even use multiple Exchange accounts/calendars from different Exchange orgs.

    Like these apps alot more than Entourage....

    Hi Jochenf2,

    My company has just upgraded to Exchange 2010 and have not had any luck connecting either Snow Leopard or Entourage 2008. Do you know if there are any specific server-side (presumably EWS) or client-side settings that need to be configured? I would be extremely grateful for any help!

    Can anyone give a definitive answer as to how to get it working connecting to Exchange server 2010  over SSL ?
    I thought its uses EWS
    Which ports need to be opened on a firewall - surely just 443
    Do IMAP or POP3 really have to be enabled ?

    My OWA and RPC over HTTP works, but Mac Mail client seems to timeout

    Can you tell me the settings you had used to setup your Apple Mail to work with Exchange 2010 ?  I can not download my e-mail and I've been on the phone for hours with my tech support person...

    Pkasin you should be using the address used for outlook web app.  EWS should be enabled by default.

    Make sure autodiscover is enabled on the server side. It makes life a lot easier...
    Then you should be fine on Snow Leopard and Mail. 

    Depending on how the server is set up, you might have to tweak the settings in iCal and Address Book.

    As for Entourage, it has to be the latest version Web Service Edition to work with Exchange 2010

    I also had problems connecting with Apple Mail to Exchange 2010 and it turned out to be a server side security setting problem of the EWS web application. By default only Windows Integrated Authentication is enabled, to allow Apple Mail to connect Basic Authentication (or was it Standard Authentication?) needs to be enabled as well.

    Mark mentioned using [Mac Mail] with Exchange 2010, where exchange was hosted by intermedia.  This is supported, and does use EWS.  Their connection instructions are here:

    Hi, Mike. I followed your instructions and I'm personally running. But here's some other issue that I hope you can shed light on.
     
    My company recently upgraded to exchange 2010. Now Mac OS X Mail can connect to and send email messages using Exchange just like iPhone and iPad users. And Mac OS X Mail users no longer need to connect through imap to exchange. All good so far ... Or is it?
     
    When sending mail from iOS devices my FROM address is logged in Sent mail.
    When sending mail from OS X (Mail) my FROM address is NOT logged in Sent mail.
     
    One of the great features is OS X Mail is the ability from your inbox to see not only whether you replied to or forwarded a message but also the clever ability to click on the Replied or Forwarded icon and having Mail show you your Reply or your Forward message. But when OS X Mail doesnl't record your FROM address this clever convenience feature breaks.
     
    In Mail setup I clearly see that my Exchange account is configured to send messages. But unlike setting up a normal SMTP service there are co configuration options.
     
    Has anyone else experienced this situation and found a resolution? Is this an exchange issue or an apple mail issue?
