Getting to Exchange 2010 while keeping the hardware
- Hi All,
I work for a rather small Microsoft partner. We're currently running Exchange 2007 on an IBM x3650 (Intel QC, 8GB, 6x70GB 15kRPM) which is now 1.5 years old. We have 50GB of Mailboxes on 40 User accounts.
Now, i'd like to keep that hardware and get to Exchange 2010. I know that inplace upgrades are unsupported, so i thought about a path to take to get this migrated with a minimum amount of effort.
Here's my idea: I have an HP ML110 G5 (2.3Ghz DC, 8GB, 4x1TB 7.2kRPM) lying around in my lab.
I can scrap this machine, load WS08R2 on it, install Ex2010, migrate Mailboxes from the x3650 to the ML110, scrap the x3650, install WS08R2 and Ex2010, move Mailboxes from the ML110 back to the x3650.
This should be a fully supported scenario, and i might run both of the servers in parallel for a week or two. Does anyone see potential issues with this migration scenario? I've tested this in VMware, and i didn't run into any issues, but it sounds a bit longwinded and complicated for a production environment. Does anyone have a better idea?- Changed TypeLukas Beeler Friday, November 06, 2009 8:19 AM

Nope. As long as the hardware is x64 it should be enough.
Move to Exchange SP2 though unless you're going to big bang your migation. And don't forget to move your SSL Cert around prior to destorying the old server along with any other customizations you made.

- Exchange 2007 SP2 is already installed, i've already prepared the certificate with a legacy hostname for coexistence, and i of course have a backup of the private key. The ML110 G5 of course has a 64bit capable CPU, it has served as a Hyper-V host in the lab.
Thanks. Everything should be good, then. - Just remember to follow the coexistence stuff and you should be fine.
