    I am doing some work for a client who is on the fringe of going out of business, in fact I am offering my services for free.. They have an Exchange 2000 priv1.edb file I have been able to repair and successfully mount with Enstella but the $299 is not even a remote option. This edb file contains a few weeks of lost mail they would like to get at. Is there a freeware comparable tool out there or some other method of getting to this data? I'd like to avoid having to replicate their Exchange environment just to get at a few weeks of lost mail.

    No there is nothing for free and while I understand that 299 seems like allot its a rather low cost tool and is good for going after an email or two but not so great if you want accuracy and completeness.  I work for Lucid8 and we make one of the top 3 competitive tools which are made by Lucid8, Ontrack, and Quest respectively.   All that aside since funds are restricted then the only other option would be do one of the following;

    1. Create a replicated environment as you pointed out and yes it takes time but its free :-)

    2. The other option would be to;

    A: Stop mail flow, i.e. do not allow users access to email and do not allow inbound messages

    B: Backup the current DB

    C: Replace with the previous copy that has the information you want to access

    D: Connect with outlook and extract the needed data

    E: Put the backed up EDB back in place, bring it up and restore mail-flow and allow users back in

    There is no doubt a tool such as this is worth a great more then $299. You confirmed for me what I needed to know and I thank you..

    You can repair your Exchange 2000 priv1.edb file using Lepide Exchange manager which will repair Priv1.edb and pub.edb database files to rebuild exchange server. Also repairs large databases for complete exchange server recovery. It efficiently restores elements from available backup, perform EDB recovery and fulfill email regulatory requirements.

    I have searched a lot on internet but couldn't find any free tool for edb to pst conversion. All are demo versions and almost around at the same price. I would suggest you to download demo version of some tool and check if it works well anough before making your mind to buy one such tool.

    John, exactly happen same with me. All are saying to get free edb pst tool that is a trial and not allowed to export any thing. A demo tool saved my few emails that was good to make mind to get license edition. The application has more options (Normal & Deep Scan, Priv & Pub edb support and Skip Mailbox) that made exporting of exchange mailboxes to pst file very comprehensively.

    If your demand is free EDB to PST tool then no one software will complete your requirements related to .edb files. But ya I can suggest you Recover Data for EDB to PST tool which is available with free download version, if you get satisfied with the application then you can invest your money here.
