I didn't panic when I got this error message this morning in our Exchange 07 box, but if anybody gets the same error, this is the right place to get an answer for it. Just try to get this Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service running.

it fix my problem right away.

    thanks for posting.

Thanks for the solution. If the service start up is set to automatic and the server hasn't been rebooted, any idea why the service would suddenly stop?

Iam not able to add new mailboxes in current exchange environment. The following practices are termed unsuccessful:

    ·         Creation new Mailbox.

    ·         Modifying any Mailbox.

    Errors Generated :

    ·         “ The address list service on the server is not running “

    ·         “ An Exchange 2007 server on which an address list service is active cannot be found.”

    Troubleshooting Performed:

The following troubleshooting steps were performed for the resolution of the issue :

    ·         Verifying Exchange services.   All services were running properly including the System Attendant.

    ·         Re-started the System Attendant services. (As mentioned in many technical forums).

    ·         Performed Failover of the Cluster. Successful but the issues persists.

    ·         Shifting FSMO roles to other domain controllers.

Your prompt support will be highly appreciated.

Anyone got anything on this one..

i am facing similar issues on exchange 2k7 servers....

this time i am sure that this has to do something with Address list and GC.

One more -- if i reboot e2k7 server - issue resolved for this server and randomly starts again on some another server.

    Please suggest.

    Thank you.

Well i have found the resolution of that issue my self...kindly apply below settings according to your scenerio .

    Problem:

Not able to add new mailboxes in current exchange environment. The following practices are termed unsuccessful:

                ·Creation new Mailbox.

    · Modifying any Mailbox.

    Errors Generated:

                · “The address list service on the server is not running

                · “An Exchange 2007 server on which an address list service is active cannot be found.”

    Cause:

This Knowledge base describes the problem that may be caused by missing or deleting computer object name of Virtual Machine (PKKHICS01E07) in Active directory.

    Note:

Verify the existence of “PKKHICS01E07” computer object name in Active Directory. If it doesn’t exist so,

Don’t try to create the computer name object manually.

    Resolution:

To resolve this issue, do the following steps.

    1.     Take the session of PKKHICS01E07 and go to Start > Cluster Administrator.

    2.     In a right pan select “Network Name (PKKHICS01E07)” right click on it and brings it offline.

    3.     Take the properties of “Network Name (PKKHICS01E07)”, under its property select the parameter tab.

    4.     Remove both checks from check boxes and then click apply and ok.

    5.     Bring “Network Name (PKKHICS01E07)” online and then bring it offline again.

    6.     Follow the Steps 2 and 3 and checked the uncheck boxes.

    7.     Bring “Network Name (PKKHICS01E07)” online, when it becomes online then

    8.     In left pan bring “PKKHICS01E07” online under “Groups”.

    9.     Now verify the existence of “PKKHICS01E07” computer object name in Active Directory.

    10.  Now check the health of exchange server by means of any modification in users’ mailbox.

I had this problem after installing the Rollup 9 for Exchange 2007.  I had to uninstall this roll up and reinstall it. Then the system attendant service magically started again.
    Thanks, JonE

Thanks ..I have just upgraded to win 2008/exch 2007 and have had several issues but am almost there. Thanks for this solution ..I can't believe it was that simple. Strange though the service was on automatic so maybe there is a bug in this new sw.

I have that problem, I can't move a mailbox from a database to another database in the same server.

I have my mailbox dserver role in a Cluster escenario.  In the active node, the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant is running.

any idea why I can't move the mailbox?

    TIA

    Víctor

What a convoluted error message! Could just say "Exchange System Management Service may be stopped" or, "A critical service is not started".

Sorry to bump a very old thread, but I am having this problem but starting the service is not the complete answer. When I attempt to start the service, it stops right away, giving the following error:

The Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service on the Local Computer started and then stopped.

    The event log entry says:

Unexpected error No authority could be contacted for authentication. ID no: 80090311 Microsoft Exchange System Attendant  occurred.

    Any ideas? THANKS!

If you have cluster mailbox, check if the service is online in Failover Cluster Management console, after you start it via services.msc.

I've tried starting the service manually, but it stops right away.  All it's telling me is that "some services" will do that.  HELP!
