edb file name when creating RSG via ExTRA
edb file name when creating RSG via ExTRA
- (Exchange 2007 SP2)
When creating a Recovery Storage Group via the ExTRA console, the edb file name in the "Recovery database path" field defaults to the name of the live database that it will link to. e.g. "Mailbox Database.edb"
The edb file name cannot be changed in this field and if you "Browse" this database does not exist because you haven't restored it from a backup yet. If you restore a backup from a database that has a database file is not named "Mailbox Database.edb" you will not be able to recover mailboxes from it since the name does not match the one in the RSG. (our production database files have unique names). As the Technet article points out "There is no support for changing data paths or moving data files after initial creation of an RSG."
Thats fine but this seems to imply that to use recovery storage groups all of your production databases should use the same edb database name as the live database that will link to the RSG ... OR ... on the Exchange server that you use for recoveries you should have a several live databases with edb file names that match those of your production databases. (e.g. database1.edb, database2.edb, database3.edb, etc).
Is this correct or is there any other way around the issue of your production edb file names not matching the linked edb file name being used for the RSG ?
Thanks
Sam

Please see the “Database File Locations” section in this article, per my knowledge, the theory should still be the same though it’s for exchange 2003. Regardless of online or offline backup, automatically or manually, the name shall be the same

Sorry, let me re-phrase my question. I'm aware that this can be done via Powershell but the question was related to the GUI. We have operations staff who are not Exchange administrators and not familiar with Powershell so using Powershell is not practical solution for these folks. The question was to do with the ExTRA GUI.
In the ExTRA GUI is there some way around the issue that occurs when your production edb file names do not match the linked edb file name being used for the RSG ? If not it should have been clearly stated by MS in the Technet articles that "if you are going to restore an Exchange 2007 database to an RSG, the file name of the source edb file name has to match the name of the target edb that you will use for recovery (e.g. "Mailbox Database.edb") otherwise you cannot use the ExTRA GUI to perform this activity"
