Exchange 2007 sp1 do not flush logs after NtBackup online work
Exchange 2007 sp1 do not flush logs after NtBackup online work
- Environment :
DCs 2003 sp2 r2
1 Exchange 2k3 sp2 on Win2k3. No problem with ntbackup. Backups scheduled with an AD account ExchangeOrgAdmin and Local Admin.
1 Exchange 2k7 sp1 on Win2k8. Can't use Exchange Sp2 with this marcellous patch for exchange snapshots on Wbackup, because i have only ONE volume (C:) on the server, with system, five SG (4 mailbox, 1PF).
Question :
When i schedule an online incremental backup with NBackup (64b, files copied on the Exchange 2k7 server), i have some application logs 'Ntbackup 8000' and '8001' of type 'EventId description cannot be found...'
But the real problem is that after a NTbackup 8000 'Backup begins '?, ESE 223 'Begins SG logs', ESE Backup 907 'Backup data transfer method is shared memory (64 kB)', NTbackup 8001 'Backup ends'?, i have also an ESE 225 event 'MsExchangeIS (2940) xSG: unable to truncate log files' before the last ESE 213 'MsExchangeIS (2940) xSG: end of backup'.
So my log files are not truncated with the online NTbackup. Why ?
The AD account used for backup is an ExchangeOrgAdmin, Exchange server admin, member of local Administrators, so (last item) has full access to the Storage group folders.
I have the same problem for all SG backups: done, without logs deletion.
Can you give me some tips or ways to investigate, please ?
Thanks a lot.
PS: sorry for this poor translating english, i'm a froggy eater !

- ntbackup on Windows 2008 is not an Exchange aware backup, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998870.aspx.
Thanks

Will Shepherd - MCSE/MCITP/MCTS (Windows 2008,Exchange 2007,OCS 2007) - You should be using the Windows 2008 backup tool. You can backup to local disk or to a network share. What problems are you having with this? It is an exchange-aware backup as you are running Exchange SP2 so would flush the logs for you.
Shaun - Hi,
With SP1, Windows backup tool is not the Exchange aware backup tool,we recommend to use DPM(database protect management) to backup the exchange data information.
With SP2,we can use the windows backup tool.

Xiu - Thanks to all for your answers.
@ Shaun : i have never done a VSS-volume backup, i'll have to probably, in a couple of months because it's the backup trend now.
But i'm not very happy on need to backup my entire server (i've just one C volume !) with system, other applications (antivirus, ...),
'cause this server has the bigger storage capacity in my little enterprise' network and i've not so much money to buy more network or local storage,
'cause i've one of my SG who needs no backup,
'cause i can't use these so marvellous RSG (if i've well understood) for online backup or dial-tone recovery, ...
Would i have been in a middle or big enterprise, no problemo : non-MS backup applications, more DAS storage capability buying or even SAN-storage, give the money !
But i can't do that in my enterprise or with many societies i work with.
@Zhang : i'll test DPM, but have read some reaction of admins who tested it and are somewhere dissatisfied. And is there a licence to use it ? Don't want to be an Outlaw in production, even if i can test it with MSDN.
For the problem i had : seems to be linked with UAC. I deactivated UAC and have no more problem ... Unless my chief admin (CEO) kills my service account's ACL rights to my network storage facility just in middle of a backup ... (just a true story happened yesterday) !

ET - Hi,
You may have to purchase DPM licensens.
So I recommend you to patch SP2 for Exchange and then use Windows Server backup.

Xiu
