hello.  i've seen a lot of posts about OAB download failing, but none match my problem.

i have outlook 2007 as client.  and first exchange 2007 sp1 on domain, on a windows 2008 machine.

on the client, when i click send/receive, it takes ~10min to "copying offline address book template file".  then an event id 27 gets generated with "OAB download failed".

from what i have seen, exchange server guid starts at offset 00b8, and outlook guid starts at 00e0.  but as you can see... there's nothing at 00b8 and 00e0 doesn't even show up.

if i check my outlook sync folder, there are synchronization logs but none of them mention that the OAB failed.  in fact, it claims that it is successfull:

    16:53:47 Synchronizer Version 12.0.6509

    16:53:47 Synchronizing Mailbox 'user'

    16:53:47 Synchronizing Hierarchy

    16:53:48 Done

16:57:31 Microsoft Exchange offline address book

    16:57:31 Download successful

Test email-autoconfiguration shows that the OAB URL is pointed at the right place and succeeds.  i'm able to visit http://server/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

i'm also able to visit http://server/oab/guid/oab.xml

has anyone encountered something and has a fix?

    Hello,

first thing I would check is to verify if the OAB really downloaded or not ( I say thi sbecause it seems that you have some contradictory information reported)

SO , create a new test user in your Domain, force a generation of the OAB on the mailbox server from the console ( or run update-offlineaddressbook). Then force the File Distribution service on the CAS to copy over the new oab file (update-filedistributionservice http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124697(EXCHG.80).aspx )

Next, download again the OAB on your OL client , disconnect from the server ( to make sure you are using the OAB ) and search for the newly created user.

If you can find it , it means that the OAB works just fine and the error message from OL is just something strange, or something you will need to address with an update to OL 2007 SP2 , latest patch if possible to see if you still get it.

If the user is not there...then you really have an OAB issue and will have togheter a closer look.

    Hope it helps,

    Mihai

Are you running Outlook 2007 sp1 or 2?

Are you running in Cache or online mode? if cache mode, delete the profile and make sure you delete the ost in c:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\outlook and try it again.

    Hi

I am running Outlook 2007 SP2 and it's running cached mode.

I have deleted the profile and all the files in the outlook folder but that didn't fix the problem.

But thank you for your suggestion Mr. Vi.

Following mihaiss's suggestion, i have created a new test user in the domain and did an update of the default offline address book, then did an update-filedistributionservice.  then i did a download of the oab and disconnecting from exchange.  that seemed to have fixed the problem.  the OL client is able to see the new test user in the Global Address List, and i no longer get warning event id 27 indicatint that the "oab download failed".  and the "copying offline address book template file" does not take few minutes to complete anymore.

i'm puzzled, as i was certain that the exchange file distribution service was working.  the web folder and the shared folder have .lzx and the oab.xml files.

perhaps the update-filedistributionservice did something to fix it.  either way, it works so thank you very much mihaiss.
