OWA fails on server
Hi,
I have installed Exchange Server 2007 beta 2 build 08.00.0605.016 on Win2K3 SP1.
I can access the exchange server through outlook but when I try to use Outlook Web Access, it does not work.
I suspected it could be some missing permissions on the web server after reading http://support.microsoft.com/?id=332097 but this didn't help.
Symptoms are listed below and any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Simon
Symptoms:
I am logged in as a members of admins and from the same machine I browse to http://localhost/owa/ and I get prompted for my user credentials several times, then I finally get an error
HTTP Error 401.2 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to server configuration.
If I look in the Application Event log I find the following entries that occur with each http request:

Simon, are you able to log on using a domain user account?
Joe Turick
E12 Beta Support EngineerHi Joe,
I have been try to access OWA from the console of the server, an rdp session on the server and from a workstation, all this with my own domain user account, and also have tried from a standard domain user's session but the same results.
I have another more fatal error now that I have rebooted the server a few times and each time I get the following:
On reboot, before I log in to the console session I get a popup with :
'At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.'
then once logged in I get the more detailed error that the the "IIS Worker Process encountered a problem and needed to close". And the dump info etc gets sent using standard error reporting.
The event viewer reveals surprising little about this:

This looks roughly like it is failing to sync Freebusy data on two shared calendars and a couple of standard folders.
From what I can see all the issues mostly seem to revolve around IIS, but I don't know if the Sync issues come from IIS as well?
Would love any help you can give.
Cheers Simon
Does this happen when you use /owa and /exchange to access an Exchange 2007 mailbox?
What build of E12 are you running? Does this server have both the CAS + MBX roles installed?
Hi Joe,
I am using Exchange Server 2007 beta 2 build 08.00.0605.016 on Win2K3 SP1. CAS and MBX installed.
I am making gains though. But still have issues. To fill you in:
Got frustrated and uninstalled.
Decided to be super thorough. Ran setup /PrepareSchema and AD and checked Event IDs.
Ran NetDiag and one of the warnings with the NetBT name test was that the Messenger Service was not running. So started this and passed both NetDiag and DCDiag with a clean bill of health.
Reinstalled using the typical components, no customisation. However still had the same issues.
I noticed that I had a recurring "event ID 1040 MSExchangeMU, Metabase Update failed replication 5 times with error 80070003" so I follow the steps in http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=1040&eventno=3972&source=MSExchangeMU&phase=1 and deleted the DS2MB and the SMTPSVC1/1/Domain keys from the IIS metabase then restarted the Exchange System Attendant service, which rebuilt these keys.
At this point I could get the front screen of OWA up and showing the regional and time settings but the next page gave an error that the mail server could not be found.
At this point I went back an corrected the ExchWeb virtual directory from c:\program files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ExchWeb to c:\program files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\ClientAccess\ExchWeb and the same with the bin sub directory.
And BINGO, OWA was up and running!!
(Note to the Exchange System Attendant team: if you delete the IIS virtual directories and restart this service, the ExchWeb virtual directory is given the incorrect path and the OWA folder is not recreated.) I did this earlier then decided to restore the metabase as it didn't solve my problem.
My remaining problems are to do with shared calendars and Free/Busy time etc:
MSOutlook: trying to open an equipment calendar using the 'Open a Shared Calendar', I have fullaccess permissions etc but I am getting the following message:
"'The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action."
On the server I get a message at the same time:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: MSExchange Autodiscover
Event Category: Provider

This is stopping me managing or viewing any shared or equipment calendars.
Interestingly, if I create an appointment in my calendar, and add this equipment to the All Attendees list then in the Scheduling Assistant I get a perfect view of their appointments and details. So assuming these two processes use different methods to access to this information then again it looks like a Web Server configuration problem.
Any ideas?
Thanks Simon
Hi Joe,
Reading the above event log more closely ....", DebugData:"" was generated for EMailAddress:"", LegacyDN:"/o=335A1087-5131-4D45-BE3E-3C6C7F76F5EC/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=Press1"...
This seems to suggest that using ADSI Edit that one might expect to see a recipients key/object then an key/object for the mailbox/user such as below:
....
+CN=Services
+CN=335A1087-5131-4D45-BE3E-3C6C7F76F5EC
+CN=Administrative Groups
+CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)
+CN=Recipients
+CN=Press1However there is not a recipients object at this location.
Could this be the cause of the problem??Cheers Simon
