QuestionOutlook Anywhere OK but local 2007 clients dog it

    We have an Exchange 2007 organization that consists of 2 LCR mailbox servers and two clustered Hub Transport/Client Access Servers.  There are currently about 85 users that presently all use Outlook 2003 RPC over HTTP to connect to the servers in the data center accross a Point to Point T1.  Performance seems adaquate in this configuration.  We recently joined a terminal server in the data center to the Exchange Domain and installed Outlook 2007 on it.  While Outlook 2007 runs fine on the server, the performance is very poor.  It consistently hangs and times out.

    To sum up: Outlook 2003 over a WAN T1 using Outlook Anwhere is fine, but a local Outlook 2007 session is intolerably slow.  How can I begin to troubleshoot what is going on?

    Hi Paul,

     

    In order to narrow down the issue, could you please help us clarify the following questions?

     

    1. If you log on the terminal server locally in the data center and test, can you reproduce the issue? If not, it can be caused by a network problem between the client and terminal server.

     

    2. Please test the issue in a workstation in the domain, how about the performance?

    Thank you for your response.  By your questioning, it does seem like you have a good understanding of the issue.  I will attempt to rule out a network communications issue by using the tests that you suggest.  I will complete these tests by the end of the day Friday and will advise you as to the results.  In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you could answer a quick conceptual question.

    I know that when Outlook 2003 RPC over HTTP talks to Exchange, it communicates with the mail store via the Client Access Server.  Is the same true of a local Outlook 2007 session initiated from within the physical data center domain?  I hope that makes sense.  I appreciate your help and look forward to working with you.

    Hi Paul,

     

    Be glad to work with you.  :)

     

    Outlook clients that are inside your firewall can access the mailbox server directly to send and retrieve messages. It doesn't talk to CAS by default, except you configure it to connect to Exchange via RPC over HTTP which is not necessary internally in most situation.

    When I attach an XP client to the network LAN and open Outlook 2007, it seems to work fine.  Does that mean anything?  How can we test why communications when we can't use "cached mode" is so slow.  I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Hi Paul,

     

    Please log on the terminal server locally in the data center and see if the issue exists.

     

    Since a XP client in the LAN works well, we could consider our current issue is not caused by Exchange Server. You could use another workstation in LAN to test it again. If terminal server is the only problematic one, we could confirm Exchange is working properly.
