Unanswered Outlook 2000: How to repair corrupted PST file?

      I also found out a PC had bad HDD sectors. (I already ran chkdsk /f)

      I have to repair a corrupted 2GB PST file from Outlook 2000.

      I have already used the Scanpst.exe file and the program could not repair
      the file.

      Are there any free tools out there that can do this?

      If it is 2 GB, it is too large and will have to be trunctated.  You will loose some data.

      That is not an acceptable solution when dealing with important e-mails.

       

      There has to be another way to repair the PST file.

      Outlook 2003 allows for a new type of PST that rids the 2 GB limit, but any PST created in Outlook 2000 is bound by the format of the PST, which had a limit of 2 GB.

       

      You could read up on some third party tools mentioned in the URL below.  Never used them, but they claim to be able to help.

      Third party tools cost a lot of money.


      I find that PST files are fragile like glass. They get corrupted so easily.

      Though I can't believe that there are no advanced free Microsoft tools that can repair PST files.

      If I installed Outlook 2003 would it import the Outlook 2000 PST file better?

      If the file was not already damaged, you could install Outlook 2003, create a new PST in the new format (you can choose either old or new style) and then dump the e-mail into the new one.  But since it is broken right now, no, it would not do you any good to upgrade to Outlook 2003 for this issue.  In general, it would be good to upgrade to at least 2003, but not to fix this issue.

       

      BTW, did you actually look at the link?  It also mentions the below:

       

      If you want to attempt repairs yourself, use a tool called a hex editor to edit the data in the file directly. Every Windows shareware site has a selection of hex editors. Eugene McCarthy of FAO Headquarters in Rome recommends the free iHex editor, which loads only 64kb of the file at a time, making it ideal for tinkering with extremely large PST files.

      Make a backup of your PST or OST, then open the original file with the hex editor (available for download from any Windows shareware site). You'll want to remove a few characters from the middle of the file, then save it and try to run the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) to repair the damage you did with the hex editor. If Scanpst can repair the file, you should be able to open it Outlook again. If not, try removing some additional characters from the file.

      If this process works, with any luck, you'll lose only one or two items. You may be able to recover 100% of the data by repeating the process with a new copy of the file, but removing the data from a different area.

      To repair a .pst file corrupted due to 2 GB size limit, use Outlook Mail Recovery (.pst) an advanced an advanced pst repair software, which repairs and creates a healthy .pst file which can be imported back to Microsoft Outlook.

      I have run the repair tool on my outlook 2000 pst file that had exceeded the 2g limit. I have made a copy, run the scan and then ran recovery software on it. I have deleted the old outlook and upgraded to 2007 because when I tried to truncate the pst file for 2000 I lost too much data. I now have tried to import the 2000 pst into outlook 2007 and my folders seem to be there but they are empty, no contacts, no inbox or sent e-mails...

       

      How do I import all of my contacts and e-mails from 2000 outlook pst to outlook 2007. It appears to all be there. It asks me about the file going into folders that are not unicoded and I told it to allow it. It said it would loose some multi-lingual features that I was not concerned with. Please help me get these contacts back. If you can send me to a link that has step by step instructions it would be most helpful because I am not an IT guru.

      OK, I am still stumped. I need help. I read that it is impossible to convert an old 97-2000 pst ansi file to the new unicode 2007 Personal Folder. Microsoft does not have anything designed for users to be able to convert and use their old files in the new 2007 Outlook. After some reading I found it suggested that if you go to FILE scroll to the DATA FILE MANAGMENT and then add the old 97-2000 file to your PF profiles. Then go back to FILE and select ARCHIVE, click on the old pst profile and achrive it into the new unicode profile, set it to include subfolder and set the archive date for a day or two after the present date forceing it to archive absolutely everything in the old pst file. Then when you go to the New Unnicode Personal Folder all of your data should be available, even hidden, subfolders and items that could not be viewed in the old because it was over the 2G limit. Well, what I found was that it gave me the old folders but they did not have contacts, e-mails or anything in those folders.

       

      When I had truncated one of the old pst files it was able to import some of the contacts and e-mails but a ton of the folders were empty or missing. Though it quickly met the 2G limit and crashed. Now that I have upgrade to 2007 I am unable to import it or add it nor am I able to do a pstscan.exe on it. Somehow this pst info is no longer available to me. I would be happy to have some of my info back verses none. I am unable to do a truncate on the copy of the original pst file and now it is unable to go through the scanpst.exe repair process. I cannot get back to the file that had some of my thousands of contacts and e-mails. help!!! How do I get to my old pst files and contacts?

      Previously I was able to perform oversized PST repair for Outlook 2000 by using Outlook Recovery tool when I faced PST file corruption problem. Demo version of this tool is available for download on the internet, which allows you to preview recovered data.
