exchange journaling and outlook searches
- hi there
We are in the midst of migrating from exchange 2003 to 2007
EX2003 allowed us to archive all email to and from a specific storagegroup to an email account
I found with 2007, i can do the same with "journaling" however the emails being copied to the account are wrapped around an attachment, and are not easily searched using outlook search folders. We frequesntly use outlook search folders to search though older emails.
What is the best approach for us to either not have the emails wrapped in an atatchment, or be able to make a search folder and have it search within the attachments for key words
thanks
lee

“Exchange 2007 supports envelope journaling only. With envelope journaling, the original message that matches the journal rule is included unaltered as an attachment to the journal report”
----------Refer to <Overview of Journaling>
If the outlook is working under cached mode, you can use Windows Search (Previous called Windows Desktop Search) to search the content in the attachments
If the outlook is working under online mode, you can search the content in the attachment directly with the Exchange 2007 Search

- This does not seem to work for us. By default Exchange 2007 does not search .msg attachments.
I however found an iFilter to make Windows Search search within .msg files @ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=134ECBB0-C162-4D07-BEF3-0B602C4A79DD&displaylang=en
To make this work on Exchange 2007 requires some more work, specified in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;944516 for other filetypes, however I'm not sure yet what to do exactly for the .msg file type without some more research. - Hi,
we use the Search-tool Lookeen at our company for searching mails on our Exchange envioroment.
The big advantage is the Lookeen searchs in cached and uncached mode and it has the shared index feature, which helps to share different indexes and reduces indexing-time to a minimum.
We had no problems up to now.
