QuestionJournaling with a Send Connector - Where are the failure points

We are in process of deploying Exchange 2007 firm-wide. We have a small sub-set of staff that are subject to Compliance Rules. The instructions to setup the Journaling are:

Create a Mail Contact (pointing to 3rd party appliance)

Create a Send Connector (to route to 3rd party appliance)

Create a Journaling Rule (to grab all applicable mail and routing to 3rd party appliance).

I have setup the Journaling, contact and send connector and have tested it. However, I noticed that if the Send Connector is not enabled, mail doesn't route to the 3rd party appliance, nor does it queue up anywhere.

My concern is trying to determine what are the failure points:

What are the odds of the Send Connector failing?

Will the Send Connector continually retry sending mail to the 3rd party appliance if the appliance is unavailable, until it is available again?

If the Send Connector retries when the appliance is unavailable, how long will it continue to retry - 24hrs, 48hrs, etc?

I've been reading the documentation from MS regarding Send Connectors, and have been unable to determine if it retries.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mail will be in the send queue for 48 hours (can be changed if there is need) and they will be in the queue if the 3:rd party appliance is unavail.

message in queue will try to be delivered at regular interval so when the 3:rd part appl. is up and running again it will receive the queued mail if they are not older than 48 hours.

Sendconnectors dont fail so they become disabled. of course there is always chance for a bug in software but if that happens it will strike your regular sendconnector to internet as well. I wouldnt worry about this if I where you.
